It is if you connect the battery to a perpetual motion generator :D

Actually maybe it's semantics, but a cold battery typically has less capacity than a warm one, so when the ambient temperature rises then your battery capacity increases doesn't it? Of course when measured at the same temperature you would expect degradation over time.

Ask Leaf owners in Phoenix or Tucson how that theory worked out for them.

And it's Time, Usage and Operating/Storage Temps that does the deed to a Li-ion pack.

I've read an article about Lithium phone batteries claiming that the wiring to and from the phone gives out long before the battery itself. The article also stated that the Lithium battery has very little degradation and theoretically could last indefinitely. I will say this--I plan to keep my Prime long enough to test that theory!

I wasn't aware that it was a theory that cold temperature decreases battery capacity. And I'm not sure how me stating that fact somehow morphs into extreme high temperatures in Arizona degrading Leaf batteries

How people interpret results is even harder than setting expectations.

13 is still above the EPA rating.

exactly. however, it may be that i drive in a way that allows me to do better than the epa test. a quick highway run might point that out. either way, we have plenty of people in the pip forum who don't reach the epa number.
20% loss is still a 20% loss, no matter how you slice it. sometimes the truth hurts toyota's marketing department.

I have also seen some battery degradation on my PiP battery.

For those stating there is no degradation...they must have found a way to get around the laws of science.

And I agree--but I'm gonna drive my Prime until the battery is no longer useful--then decide to replace the battery or the car. More than likely the battery! I'm aiming for at least 250,000 miles!

    the prius is
the Prius is magic, it runs on love and unicorn farts.. for some odd reason people refuse to admit these cars all have problems like any other machine, Im constantly being scolded here for telling the truth about the issues Ive had with mine.. people dont like the truth I guess

Sparkie the Volt is over 436,000 miles on its original Li-Ion battery.

    "Wiring gives out"??
    "Li-ion batteries last indefinitely"??
Does this Phone Nerd have any credentials?
    Do you believe this?

I commend you on planning on keeping your Prime a long time!
And if you live where it doesn't get really hot or cold, or both (Midwest), you may get to report a long, slow degradation of your pack.

However, it would last longer with a proper TMS, but the car would cost more....

People ask me, "How much to replace the Pack?"
I reply, "When do I replace the Pack?"

I'll still love my little S-Box BEV when it degrades to 50-60 mile of range. (40-50 miles? some Leafs get there.)
If I keep after the plotting I could tell you when that will happen.

OK, good! You have plenty to believe.

Every month or so there is a 'Revolutionary' new battery development that makes outrageous claims.
Only you never hear about them again.

BTW, lifetime of the devices, or lifetime of the owner???

Also, this is from the very vague title from your link: ...could lead to vastly longer lifespans for batteries...

    "I want to believe."
Do, do, di do,,,, dido, dido, dido.....
