Oil Catch Can, Eliminate that knock!

    One thought about low quality tubes(what many seem to use) what comes with many low cost OCC's: They might not handle fuel & oil. Rubber tubes what not meant for fuel will harden up and may start getting to Small peaces. Would not wanna know what happens when those get to cylinder chaimbers/between valves :S

    You can buy good quality, black rubber fuel line hose, spec'd. SAE-30R7, for around $1.50 per foot, through any local automotive specialty store. Get the good stuff!

    I'm finally about ready to do this project. Is there a list anywhere of all the stuff I need? Going through the entire thread is becoming way too unwieldy.

    - Catch Can ( obviously ) (y)
    - 3/8" Fuel line ( 'the good kind' SAE-30R7 ) (y)
    - Brass Barbs for connections to PCV tube. (y)
    - Hose clamps? If I use barb connectors do I need them? (y)
    - A mounting bracket of some sort ( usually MacGuiver'ed ) (y)

    Anything else?

    I used hose clamps on all connections, they're cheap. But I really suspect they were overkill: those brass barb connectors are tenacious. You can also get some connectors that are less barb-like, just one or two rounded bumps.

    I filed the sharp edges off my barb connectors a bit, and they were still tough as heck to pull off, which I needed to do a couple of times. I saw the barb connectors at my hardware store, snapped them up. But just the other day I was in again and noticed a second style, with just one/two rounded bumps, easier to work with if you can find them.

    This one looks a little easier to pull off, just one barb at the end, and the rest just bumps:

    Have you got a particular can in mind. If you have deep pockets, this one is sweet:

    Moroso 85474 Universal Air/Oil Separator

    It's the one I used, no complaints. FWIW, if you sold or traded in the car, you could take the can with you.

    Well, a couple of complaints:

    1. The supplied bolts for connecting the aluminum collar to the mounting bracket did NOT want to play nice with the threads in the collar. I took the bracket to a local hardware store and found some bolts that worked fine, 1/4" NC if I recall correctly. The should be around 3/4" length at most or they'll bottom out: just check by screwing them in.

    2. The supplied hose is good, but only about 3', maybe 40", at most. Six foot would be nicer. The supplied hose was actually enough for my install, but just saying. It's easy to buy hose at local automotive shops if needed.

    Low mounting works for me along with a remote drain valve. No need to take the bottom panel off for draining.

    After using the OCC over one winter, suggest anyone using this in a cold climate (between -30 to 32 F) and driving a lot of highway miles understand the need for frequent draining. No less than once a week, maybe more. I don't want to be the one to discover the negative impact to the engine if the OCC completely fills up.

    Checked my OCC today. About 300km and there was like one spoon of ”coffee”. Last time at the late fall when i had OCC, it gathered much more water. My car trips are quite short so engine gets much moisture when weather is cold. But at the winter time i try to take longer run at least once per week to ”dry” my engine, thats when OCC gets a lot water(but i dont keep OCC during freezing temps).

    At least at my driving style there would be no change to empty OCC at winter time like before winter and then after winter during oil change etc. It would fill up like in couple of weeks and engine would then love to start getting OCC contents to intake manifold :S

    has anyone done an installation video on this? I get the general idea, but I'm not quite grasping where to connect the lines to. Thinking might be a good thing to add to my '14 later this year when i cross 100k.

    Is this still where you have yours mounted? I've read I should install below the PCV valve. What's your expert opinion? Trying to install today... thanks!

    Yeah, most likely with that bracket. I’ve seen others mount on the passenger side, and on the bottom. I like the right side for easier access. The bracket is a simple piece too.

    For a lower mount, slotted angle can work.

    To be fair, my Moroso can came with that mounting ring, plus a rudimentary mounting plate I didn't use, sub'd slotted angle. If a configuration like that would work for anybody, there is lots of space above the lower cross beam. I used through bolts, but if I was doing it over I might just go with pilot holes and self-tapping screws. Just be sure to put some sort of rubber between the slotted angle and beam, and just snug the screws: you want to allow the beam to flex.

    FWIW, I used 1/4" through bolts (there are openings in the bottom flange, you can fish the bolts through), rubber washers under the slotted angle, and double nuts: the first finger-tight, the second torqued against the first.

    I appreciate lower mount limited access is going to nix this approach for some.
