Nice color! Can you also share your experiences with the Tesla and why you decided to sell the Tesla to get the Prime? I feel like OP's thread got totally hijacked!

I know some consider the Prime the poor man’s Tesla. Personally, I would not trade my Prime for a Tesla for 2 reasons: if there are issues, repairs would be difficult, at least in Minnesota. And the headlights ( at least on the S and X) are rated as poor - both by the IIHS and personal friends. Dark comes early up here during the winter.

I considered the Tesla, but we don't actually need more than the 25 mile EV range for daily commuting. It will be even better if they can double this someday. If we do go on a longer trip, I don't want to go to charging stations. The price difference at my income level is signifgant. It just doesn't seem like 100% electric is actually a good feature, instead an annoyance, for longer trips.

Welcome to Prius Chat. You'll find many Prius Prime owners who continue to investigate and share Prius Prime performance features. These are things not or poorly documented in the Owner's manual. Sad to say, we are required to immediately visit the Hyundai, Tesla, GM, and Nissan forums to share our good news just as their advocates come here to share their 'insights.' <grins>

Seriously, there is an excellent 'ignore user' option that can improve the Prime_signal-to-noise ratio.

So what was your previous ride?

Wow, am I jealous! :) Just gave up my wait on a Model 3 and got my Prime. I figured out that by the time I got a base model or even AWD, the rebates would go away partially or entirely and I'd be paying far, far more than I just dropped on my Prime. So in this case, its reputation is true -- this is my poor-man's Tesla! Loving it so far, though, and have no concerns about how far I am from the nearest Tesla center. Betting that by the time I'm done with the Prime, a Tesla will be more accessible and have far more infrastructure behind it. But then I'm in the wilds on the East Coast.

Enjoy your new ride! It's gorgeous!

523A80E2-13AB-4B19-A7D4-A551FA62F4EE.jpeg Congrats on getting your Tesla! It’s like a two year pregnancy with a bundle of joy at the end!

Our lineup parked at the office...all three are ours.

Comment on the Tesla reliability after 1month, still have hiccups with the charge port door. The car tells us there’s a problem, we’re not sure what the problem actually is though. Saw a early VIN model 3 at the tinters and it did have significant finish issues. Tesla will correct all issues, don’t be shy with them.

if you drive 3 or 4 hours and don't need a catheter, then yeah I get the range issue. Similarly if by reliability you mean fit-and-finish then I get that as well. But if you mean the car ends up on the side of the road, well that just ain't so.
Tesla Model S Tops Consumer Reports' Ratings After Getting Key Safety Feature - Consumer Reports
That's why it has such a long warranty and even longer traction pack warranty. Oh .... and infrastructure? After driving across a half dozen states - we found superchargers at approximately 70 mile intervals. But not yet in every Podunk God forsaken backwoods poop hole. But yeah, I guess if you need them every 40 miles, right now/today then we're again in agreement.
But if you need to drive over 300 miles all the time - why would you need all those extra Chargers
    ;)
All that said - I put my foot down that the better half only get a leased model X, because you just know how things go with brand new models. We had tons of issues with our Gen 2 Prius for the same deal, it was new and lots of new stuff to go wrong. Now? Not so much.

Range has nothing to do with a catheter. If there were a charger everywhere I stopped to pee, range would be less of an issue, but still an issue. The problem is, I've driven more than 640 miles without being near any sort of charger, and am planning to do so again this year, but in a different place. Even if there were chargers everywhere, our usual stop is 8 minutes long, so that's how long the charger has to put in enough range to get me to the next charger. Either that, or it has to have enough range to get me to lunch (where there has to be a fast charger that can do the job in 45 minutes) or to the overnight stay (where there has to be a destination charger that can do the job overnight).

In the last year, exactly one place I stopped to eat had a charger - Hays Kansas. And one hotel had a destination charger (Custer, SD). All the rest of my stop locations had neither one.

yep - just like I already said, the godforsaken places.

So, you're right. Best to not even think of a Tesla for yourself, or anyone else who regularly drives 600 plus miles. We all need to figure out what works best for us, weather a Harley, land barge, bicycle, or even a Prius.

You sound like a joy to travel with. Do you have a timer out for those 8 and 45 minute stops?

Just because they're places you haven't gone doesn't mean they're places not worth visiting. In fact, most of the places that are the most worthy of a visit are nowhere near a major city.

One thing I did is use Tesla's trips web site to see how long Tesla thinks it will take to get somewhere in one of their cars. I then compared that to my Google Timeline recording of how long it actually took me. In most cases, it takes 2-3 hours longer per day to get somewhere in a Tesla compared to a Prius Prime, if you can get there at all. I compared against a 100D and a Model 3 extended range.

Oh, and charging a Model 3 at a Supercharger costs more than fueling a Prius Prime. So, not only do get to sit around and wait, you get to pay more as well. And don't think you didn't pay for that cost when you bought your Model S or X - you did.

No, I just wait for people to come back. On the longer rest-stop breaks, it's more like 10-15 minutes before the kids get bored and want to get back going. We've never had a break longer than 15 minutes that wasn't for a meal or an overnight. And we stop often - every 1.5-2.5 hours.

This simply isn't true unless you take the very worst case scenario for a Model 3 and the best case scenario for a Prime. Show your work please.

    $0.24/kWh, 4 miles/kWh (on the open road, if you're lucky) = $0.06/mile
    $2.70/gallon, 54 miles/gallon (measured, in heavy cross winds) = $0.05/mile
