Oil Selection For Warm Countries

IIRC, 0w-20 is better for warmer climates than the 0w-16. I want to say that I recall 5w being suggested for super hot climates.

 

5w-30 is a good option too as this grade is recommended in Pakistani premium car dealership like Audi BMW MB

 

You can say 5w-30 not recommended for your hybrid Prius c.please consult your local dealer prior to change.Bare in mind these Toyota models are not made for Pakistani market so more homework to do for choosing correct oil

I have always advocated that we should stick to manufacturer recommendation so 0w-20 is the way to go.
I would worry about the quality, as each oil manufacturer has its own formulation.

 

5W30 was the specified oil for 2nd generation Prius (up to and including 2009 model year) in North America. There a few 3rd generation (2010~2015) N.A. owners here also using 5W30 (instead of spec'd 0W20), especially higher mileage cars with some oil consumption.

I really don't think you can go wrong using 5W30, especially considering your climate. OW20 also is ok, it is spec'd for third gen, even in Australia. But perhaps 5W30 is safer for engines, in extreme climate.

This is what I mean in my last post Indus motor,honda atlas or Suzuki Pakistan when you visit them sometimes they even don't entertain you saying we did not sell this car so we can not take this car moreover they have their own local car which usually visit 50 to 60 car in single day neither technician take pain nor they have training when they visit Indus motor Karachi I have many friends in Honda and Toyota dealership so this is my personal experience all Prius Aqua vezel fit insight owner usually looking a local workshop rather than to go to dealership

I have seen 0w-20 at Toyota dealership in Lahore.
You worry too much, just enjoy your car.
The climate is much harsher in Lahore, I am using 0w-20 (KIXX) without any problem. I use original Toyota oil filter and change it with every oil change at 5000kms intervals.

 

Isn’t choosing the right oil viscosity for cars about climate conditions? For example where I live temperatures go as low as -14c and up to 44c in the summer. Recommended operating temperature for 0w20 oil is -34c to 30c. So, In order to protect the engine at 44 Celsius degrees climate conditions, I need to use greater than 40w oil. I want to say then maybe I should use 0w-50 oil which would cover it for all climate conditions. Or should I use 0w20 for winter, and 10-50 for the summer?

 

Climate is only one consideration; fuel economy is another. In the U.S., for the 2014 Prius model in your profile, the Owner’s Manual (PDF) recommends SAE 0W-20 engine oil for all conditions.

The page shown in your photo appears to be from an Owner’s Manual issued in Australia, where SAE 0W-20 oil might not have been universally available at the time of publication.

 

"0" refers to temperature which helps start the car in cold weather conditions, it does no harm to the engine if used in warm weather, like Pakistan, number "20" Refers to viscosity of Oil at 100°C. as temperature increases viscosity increase. Low viscosity oils are being recommended in almost all modern engines to achieve higher fuel economy, Aqua is Hybrid car designed for Fuel efficiency, That is why 0W20 is being recommended. one more thing is that AQUA being hybrid car requires more frequent engine start than a normal car, its a requirement of engine that engine oil should reach quickly to its desired location that is why low viscosity oils are being recommended for Hybrid cars.

P.S. I am using LIQUI MOLY 0W20 best oil available in Pakistan, run 10K KM easily

 

I’d put my money on a regular oil that meets the specs, and stick with a short oil change interval, say 6 months or 5k miles.

 

Er, what leads you to think that the Liqui-Moly 0W-20 isn't "a regular oil that meets the specs"?

AFAIK that stuff is very well made. It's the same weight indicated by the manual, and with an ILSAC GF-6A rating it meets Toyota's GF-5 spec.

And apparently available in Pakistan. I'd use that in a heartbeat.

 

Ok. It was just when I hear a name like that, and mention of extended oil change interval, my (admittedly knee-jerk) reaction is it's overpriced snake oil.
