Just made 250,000 miles. Still going strong with 45+ MPG. Original HV battery. Needs shocks and some new paint on the roof (Arizona car)
1) Did you replace the HV battery pack? previous owner did at around 250k 2) Did you replace the 12v lead-acid battery? yes replaced around 250k, not sure if it was the original battery 3) Did you replace the hybrid transaxle fluid? not sure of previous history of that 4) Did you replace the brake pads? going to soon, currently at 254k 5) Your lifetime MPG (if available)? 35-47mpg 6) How often do you change your oil? What brand / product did you use? not sure about previous history of oil changes, last oil change was at 252k, next one is at 257k, last one was 5w-30, not sure if i should use full synthetic also all 4 tires were replaced at 250k
2007 Prius Touring with 213,000 miles and counting. My purchase anniversary is in June. Last year, I hit almost exactly 200,000 within 2 days of purchase anniversary.. was cool 1) Did you replace the HV battery pack? No, still original, but I can tell it won't be long before I have to 2) Did you replace the 12v lead-acid battery? No, still original 12v battery!! 3) Did you replace the hybrid transaxle fluid? Yes, once before 100k and again at 211k 4) Did you replace the brake pads? Fronts twice, second time rotors. Rears still original, but I have the stuff to do them soon 5) Your lifetime MPG (if available)? I used to get over 47mpg avg, now closer to 42mpg. This is Chicago cold winters and driving on heavier non LRR snow tires for a few months. 6) How often do you change your oil? What brand / product did you use? I was changing at 10k, then 15k, then back down to 5k. I noticed oil consumption right around 150k. It's gotten worse. I was using M1 5w-30. I was having to add at least a quart prior to my 5k oil change. Last 2 oil changes, I've used Shell Rotella T6 full syn 5w-40 and NO oil needed to be added!! The engine sounds quieter and smoother as well.
I hit 215k in December 2017 on my '05 Prius. It's been a great car - changed the 12V battery twice, two brake pad changes, 1 water pump change. I bought a Bolt in anticipation of my son getting his drivers license and inheriting the Prius . . . but now my traction (HV) battery is throwing trouble codes due to a bad module or two. It's also starting to consume 2 +/- quarts of oil between regular 5k oil changes. So here's my dilemma: pay to replace the traction battery (looking at GreenTec for $1550 with 18 month full warranty) or donate the car for a tax deduction. I'm leaning towards the battery replacement but wondering if I'll just end up tossing more and more money into repairs. Any thoughts or advice out there?
Mike, I'm kinda in the same boat.. 2007 with 214k miles. My HV battery is not throwing codes, but it's showing signs of failure. I started a thread that might interest you... What to do with my 2007?? | PriusChat As for your oil consumption, I was in the same boat.. 1-2 quarts every 5k. Two oil changes ago, I switched to Shell Rotella T6 5w40 and that has made a huge improvement. I can go the whole OCI without adding. I start with 4qts which is just above the top dimple on the dipstick. When 5k rolls around, I'm right at the lower dimple. Do a little research, i found a few people doing this with Prius's on BITOG forums
I hit 218 with my 2008, I had a remanufactured battery installed after I received the Red Triangle, I shortly had to have the same shop replace that pack after less than 10K, although was getting 55mpg. Never replaced brakes, change oil around every 7500 or so. Did transmission fluid at dealer around 140k, yeah I know was late. Replaced gear shift after it began slipping out of gear, replaced fan after it failed on a hot summer day. I started experciencing a blank dashlight issue around 220k and just kept unplugging 12v battery, I am on my second 12battery now. I'm at 225K now, I just took the dash out to get at the bad dashboard component. Resetting the computer no longer works as my dash is always dark now... I think I'm going to have it redone at a shop which is giving a lifetime warranty. We have three prius, wife has 2012 fully loaded wagon, daughter has loaded 2013 with no leather. We love these mpg cars!
Here is my recent entry into the 200K club. Now, full disclosure, I bought the Prius 6 weeks ago with 198K miles on it. But, it has been a great vehicle in that short time. Lookin forward to posting in the 299K thread in the near future! Paul.
Hit 200,000miles in my 2004 last month. We've owned it since 2006, bought with 17k on clock. Car has had a hard life from me since I took it over from my wife 6 years ago (on arrival of third child). I doubt that there is another Prius out there in the northern hemisphere which has spent more time on dirt roads, it in effect replaced a Range Rover for most of my work use. Still on original HV battery, battery performance has tailed off a bit but still ok. Still getting 45mpg (imp gal) Burning engine oil like a 2 stroke! 1litre of oil every second fill of petrol. But engine is untouched from new and I will be changing car in 3 or 4 months in any case. 0 oil consumption until 125k, got progressively worse over next 50 and since 175K have been topping up every second fill of petrol. Redid all the front suspension and rear shocks at 180k but that was the first wear item aside from tires and pads. Unbelievable if you saw the roads I drive!! Broke both rear springs, replaced with scrapyard items. Car is on Bilstein shocks all round since 180k. I did the transaxle oil change as recommended. Replaced one wheel bearing due to and ABS sensor fault. Exhaust back box replaced twice due to corrosion (OE lasted 9 years, cheap knock off 2 years) That's it as regards parts. Problems, very few but some would have been terminal for another owner. Between 80 and 100k had issues with relay contacts, took it to dealer expecting repair under hybrid warranty. relay found and replaced but was told it was not covered by warranty, so pay up €900!!. That was its last trip to a dealer. Had an issue with intermittent no start due to brake switch contacts, solved thanks to help on here!!! Not taking it to dealer had knock on for my main (most likely self inflicted) issue which was break pad wear. Whether I had sticking calipers or badly bled brakes I've had persistent issues with sticking brakes. Car was fine on half worn pads but had problems on new sets, only solved by replacing 1 pad at time. The terminal problem would have been a battery cooling fan issue. The cooling fan was not coming on, giving a fault with the fan control relay. Efforts to trace trace problem led to a fault within the ECU and there were no scrap ones in Ireland to change the ECU. Did a workaround by putting a manually controlled PWM operating the fan and keeping the battery temp below 36deg. The Torque app was invaluable here and I would have had to get rid of the car but for it. Exhaust manifold cracked last week but from back box forward is from new so that is unbelievable (I live right beside the Atlantic so salt gets everything) Overall could not have been happier with the performance of the hybrid system. So happy in fact that when we changed my wife's car last year we bought a 2012 Estima Hybrid Japanese import. I will be changing this summer. The engine is untouched bar plugs and filters, the battery is 14 years old, the cat and manifold are now gone and the car was never really suited to my work anyway, I could spend €1000's and still have the wrong 14 year old car. I'm trying to decide between 2nd hand Lexus Rx450h or Subaru Outback. I really need 4wd and the extra ground clearance for work. But the Prius has absolutely proven to me the upside of Toyota Hybrid.
If you have little to no blue smoke in your exhaust, you probably have a gummed open PCV valve due to poor oil drain back under the valve cover. I had the same problem. I went through the T I M E to replace mine. Lasted about 3 months before the second one gummed up. My intake manifold looks like an oil sump. iPhone ?
Last week while on a trip my 2007 Prius went over 200k. It has been a great car. 1) Did you replace the HV battery pack? Yes, I replaced it myself about a year and a half ago. 172 or 173k. 2) Did you replace the 12v lead-acid battery? Yes.Not sure when and miles but maybe 2 and a half years ago? 3) Did you replace the hybrid coolant fluid? Yes I had a dealer replace both the hybrid and the ICE coolant. 4) Did you replace the brake pads? Not yet. 5) Your lifetime MPG (if available)? I guess about 45. 6) How often do you change your oil? What brand / product did you use? I have changed the oil between 5k and 10k. Did it more often earler and my goal now is 7-8k. Mobile 1 Synthetic. 0B20 mostly. 7) How about post a picture of 200,000 miles on ODO? Not the best picture. It was a bright sunny day. A few days later.
I forgot to mention that I have replaced the tires a couple of times. I drained and filled the transmission fluid twice. I change spark plugs once and might do them again soon. I changed the hybrid battery myself after buying a new Toyota battery from a dealer. Change the air and cabin filters every so often. I have not driven it as much in the last two years due to some medical issues. But it has been a great car for us.
No, we bought it used back in 2009 or 2010. I drove it quite a bit around in Georgia, Florida, and Alabama for several years. A few trips up to Indiana but nothing cross country. The last year and a half or so I have not driven as much due to some medical issues. Glenn
Closing in on 190k on the clock, but since we lived with an intermittent gauge cluster for over a year & a half, (until I slapped some radial electrolytic caps from my electronics bin on the Gauge cluster circuit board; many thanks to the hardworking guys who posted here on PC the board level repairs needed). Since the gauges were mostly off for at least a year, I am guessing that technically we topped 200k already. I suppose we'll never really know.... I'm a self taught shade tree Prius tech. My father in law bought this car new in 2005, & I've Been Servicing this Gen 2 for roughly the last 100k+ mi. Basically Since about the time the warranty ran out. We have really only let the dealer put in free parts since about 2009. Basically we have had no unscheduled maintenance needed except for dealing with the traction battery when it went down... Of course if I knew then what I know now, I could have extended it's usable life instead of pushing it til it failed... Car has had all oil changes performed, more or less on time at 5k, ( well a couple times we got busy & went to 10k). Transmission fluid changed at 30k, 90k, 150k. Spark plugs at 100k. Both coolants changed at 120k. I installed KYB GR2 struts at 120k as well. 12V battery died about 125k. Replaced it with an optima yellow top. Inverter water pump replaced by dealer for free at 160k. First set of front brake pads were replaced at 165k mi. Rotors were pitted from Hawaiian salt air, so I replaced them too. Rear shoes are still original. Control arms, ball joints, steering components, wheel bearings & axles are all original & in good shape. Planning to change the engine water pump soon; there is some play in the bearing, although it doesn't leak at all. Biggest to do was when the traction battery went down at 175k mi. $200 for another failed pack for parts, $200 for pro quad charger/ reconditioned, and a fair amount of effort and learning got the car back on the road... Overall Car is tight & drives great, (although I am planning to implement a circuit that allows me to turn down the electric steering boost to improve road feel). Car drives Nicer with the KYB's & GT Sport rain tires than any other Gen 2 Prius I've driven. Even better than other gen 2's with only ~60k on them.... It does burn some oil, I guess about 1 qt. every 1700 mi. Not all that bad, but I plan to check the PCV valves as they are OEM... I love this car, as much for it's efficiency as for how little actual work it requires. It is by far the easiest car to maintain I have ever had. It is still getting around 43 mpg even with lots of steep little mountain roads, & climbing 2500' elevation in a few miles of fast highway.... When I go on a longer mellower drives across the island, the efficiency is closer to 50 mpg. Easily over the last 13 years this car has gone farther on less $$$ than any other vehicle available. Given $.36/kWhr electricity it costs considerably less to run at present than an equivalent electric car. Also it seems the Nissan Leaf's I see from 2011 are already under 50 miles of usable range.... Given tropical heat, & a lack of active battery thermal controls, we are seeing accelerated battery degradation in the Nissans. I am all for Electric cars, however for us out here with expensive electricity, and lithium packs needing refinement for longevity, pure EV's are years off in the future somewhere for us. The Prius is the last gas powered car I intend to own. We're going the distance... As long as it takes while we wait for good used EV's with 200+ mile range to be available for under $10k. With the Prius, it is tried & true, & we know what to expect. We are hoping for the best, and mostly prepared for the worst mechanically that could happen. I have a couple boxes of spare modules, spare brake booster pump & a spare inverter from a wrecked car. Also a spare engine from a Gen 1 with only 60k on it. Planning to collect a spare transaxle when one comes up too... Looking for at least 300k out of the original major drivetrain components. Prepared to go half a million miles if it takes that long for good EV's to be abundant. Happy & smooth cruising all. Hope your Pri'i are as good to you as ours has been to us...
I have a 2004 with 255K miles, except for the few listed issues below it has only required routine maintenance. It's the most reliable and economical car by far that I've ever owned. I've only taken this car to the dealership for recalls. I do all my own maintenance: Brakes, Fluids, Filters, Serpentine belt, Light Bulbs. Other items not part of the list below, that I'd expect to have replaced by now (but have not) include CV joints, Shocks (needed), Water Pump, ... and of course we don't need a starter or alternator (IIRC). It's fun getting to rub this all in to my Prius hating (Political) friends who simply can't believe all the misinformation they've held onto about hybrids all these years. 1) Original HV battery pack 2) Replaced 12v lead-acid battery 3) 2X replaced the hybrid transaxle fluid (100K Miles ea); Plan to do every 60K mi. going forward. 4) 150K mi. replaced the brake pads (I could have put at least another 50K on the front pads, but I had the wheels/calipers off, ...) 5) Mileage has dropped to about 42 MPG, but we use a trailer hitch for bicycles. 6) I change the oil about every 5K miles. 7) Will need to post a picture of the ODO later. Issues to date: 1) Center Display intermittently goes out. (Known issue with 04 Prius): pc board needs touch-up to remove solder mask covering a pin land, and re-solder (a low cost DIY that otherwise costs ~ $1500 from the dealer) 2) It's about time for a new set of shocks 3) I DO need to check Oil level often (consumes at least 1 qt/ 5k mi, no leaks) 4) I replaced the coils at ~ 200K miles, found water intrusion to spark plugs / Ignition coils (Known issue with 04 Prius); I consider 200K mi. excellent for a set of coils BTW.
I am noticing that when I get it washed, it feels like it is going to stall. Also, now, lately if I am stuck in traffic, it is doing that too. Any thoughts?
