Acceleration on the Prius cannot exceed that of the Prime, I assume. Fuel economy would be affected too.

I truly can’t stand the look of the rear end on the Prime. The front is okay (but I worry about the clear coat holding up). I just hope they don’t make all Prius’s rear end look like the Prime.

Though - I’m putting a quarter million on this baby so I don’t care for a few more years ;)

Interesting they got rid of the 'Zorro' tail light assembly. I don't mind the current one...however, it is either love it or hate it thing...and there are many who absolutely hate it.

Fuel economy ratings would drop with the 2L, and the Camry hybrid already matches the Prius combined rating in the US.

I'm not sure that is true. The Camry Hybrid ,with 2.5L engine, is bigger and heavier than the Prius yet gets "prius Like" mpg. Maybe they have made additional efficiency improvements over the past 3 years that are incorporated into the Camry and would be used in a 2.0L engine in a Prius.

As far as the looks, for those of us (or at least for me) who don't like the looks of gen 4, the changes shown in the article don't make it look much, if any, better.

Are there any dimensions showing up yet that anyone has seen? I would love them to make the backseat as roomy as the Gen 3 model. Probably not going to make any changes like that, I would assume this is only cosmetic stuff? Thoughts?

Only cosmetics. If they did too much there would be a lot of testing and recertification likely needed.

Right- that makes sense. Not sure why they went smaller in back. Not terribly useable as a family wagon like our ‘13.

Why? Keep in mind that the Gen 4 is only TNGA by chassis. The CH-R and Camry are full TNGA models. That means, the Prius could, in theory, get a new TNGA-inspired engine. It could be a new 1.8 litre or it could be the 2.0 litre.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Touring models got the 2.0 litre and the regular models got the 1.8 litre to differentiate the two.

Nope. It's just a midlife update.

I get the feeling there's more design into this generation (form over function). The Gen 2 had the largest back seat even though it's several inches shorter than the Gen 4 because of the stubbier design.

@Tideland Prius That makes sense. I actually have not been in a gen 2 Prius before. Only seen photos. The gen 3 has been plenty of space for our two kids. One is 10 the other is 7. The 10 year old now is just on the regular seat (no booster) so even more leg room. Maybe the gen 4 would be fine once both girls are out of booster seats. :)

You mean the expected life of a 2016 Prius is only until 2022 or 2023 ?
The vast majority of cars on the road today last longer than that!

I planned on my Prius lasting far longer. My son kept his 2005 for 10 years.

Maybe mid-generation update is a better description?

I always thought the Saab 900 was a classic design. So unique. Just like the gen 4 Prius.

Great info and insight. Thank you

The LS Camry hybrid was 'gamed' like the Prius Eco to get a high MPG rating by cutting weight, and using smaller wheel than the ICE LS has. The other Camry trims are rated at 46mpg combined.

Their 2.5L engine is 41% thermally efficient versus the Prius 1.8's 40%, though we can't ignore weight differences between them for a car's rating.. I expect the 2L to be about as good as the 2.5 there. Toyota likely could put it in the the Prius, and keep the 52mpg figure. Though that might mean lessening the buffer they have between the actual test results and the window sticker.

I'm not saying they couldn't put it in(though you got the keep engine bay dimensions in mind). I am saying they won't in the US because of the Camry LS hybrid having the same combined MPG rating as the Prius. I don't think Toyota would want to try selling a Prius rated lower than the Camry on the window sticker.

Also keep mind a whole new engine means paying for all the testing and certification. Changing the injection alone may not require that large expense. A sportier Prius might sell better, but new engine introductions tend to be rare for midcycle refreshes. They might happen do to a year or so after new model introduction because of logistics; the 1.6 diesel coming to the Cruze for example. But the only refresh that included a new engine that comes to mind is the Fusion getting the 2.7 V6, and that also included AWD.

I think Toyota will hold off on a different engine for the Prius until they also can upgrade the inverter electronics.

Current Prius with too strong design of Aku, drastically renewed at the end of 2018
    [IMG]
▲ The position of the turn signal protruding downward from the headlamp has been reviewed and changed to a general looking minor change version Prius's front mask
A dilemma that can not be the same as PHV
The current Prius, which is asked for individuality too much and the negative voice to the design is also heard, will be greatly changed by three years after the appearance. At the minor change, the surroundings are reworked and turn into a look similar to the PHV version. The challenging design of the current Prius where voice of confusion was raised also from the sales site. As a factor to achieve good fuel economy, aerodynamic characteristics can not be ignored, so streamlined silhouettes can not be thrown away. As a result, you will have no choice but to pursue freshness with detail, resulting in the current type (4th generation) design. In addition, Toyota had a big task of differentiating it from PHV which failed in the previous model. In the previous generation, even the detail design was the same, and on the market there was dissatisfaction such as "I bought a high price PHV, it looks the same as the base Prius". For the current PHV, the front and rear of the body were separately designed and designed. However, "From the Prius of the base, PHV is cooler" "Do you intentionally make the Prius more accessible to buy a higher PHV?" A negative voice squirted. Even within Toyota, negative voices to the Prius design were problematic and even the plan to port PHV's face as it was lifted. However, if you do it, you will step on the same rude as the previous generation. For Toyota, differentiation from the original home Prius is an important issue, but there is a dilemma that can not be the same design as PHV.

The appearance is awaited, what is the identity of the minor change model
So, what kind of looks will the minor change version released at the end of 2018 change? First, in the front mask, the turn signals protruding downward from the lamp are relocated, and the outline of the lamp body is renewed into an orthodox shape.

The garnish at both ends of the bumper was also renewed and seems to change to a portrait shape similar to PHV. Both sides of the trapezoid intake add a black line reminiscent of the late precursor type.

The feeling of replacing the rear view may also be a frustrating point for the current owner. The tail lamp which had a presence in the night got renewed from the portrait design, it was renewed into a C shape similar to PHV, and it turns into a smart impression.

The LED line that lights along the subwindow directs a wide feeling, guides the line of sight of the following driver to the left and right, it should appeal the figure as it is.

[IMG]▲ Along with the low nose, Bi beam type is used for the eye-catching current headlight. A turn signal is embedded in the part protruding downward
[IMG]▲ Even though it is not a minivan, the tail lamp that appeared in the vertical direction has been redesigned to shape along the bottom edge of the subwindow, and a design similar to PHV is created. It seems that the end of the lamp is shaped sharply and only the surface shadow is left.
[IMG]▲ It should have been seen by everyone, once in a tail lamp lighting in a jagged line shape. It is strange that the aim was to use a design that guides the line of sight up and down though it is a low-height car
    Engine incorporates TNGA technology
Although the current Prius is the first TNGA generation platform to be adopted, development is not in time for on-board engines, and old generation units have been diverted. Although the same engine is diverted even after a minor change, the technology being put into practical use in the TNGA generation is incorporated to improve the efficiency.

D - 4S is used as a fuel injection device, port injection and direct injection are used separately, improving combustion efficiency. Practical fuel economy will also be upgraded.

[IMG]▲ 1.8L engine is replaced by improved version. Just like the new-generation unit mounted on Camry, direct injection technology is used and fuel injection control is likely to be reviewed (photo is current unit)
    * It is a forecast article about the announcement of a new model as of April 8, 2018. It does not guarantee the announcement

I've never seen it with photos of a revised body. Is this world-wide or Japan only. Those 2 colours aren't available other than in Japan.
