While looking in the charging section of the manual to see if the traction battery should be charged or uncharged when parking the car for a month or so I came a section (on page 110) that discusses an error warning when the charging cable is reaching the end of its usable life span. Then another error warning when it has actually reached the end of its usable life span. Of course, there is no mention of what the usable life span is of the charging cable. Will it last as long as the traction battery, or should I think about replacing it a year or two down the road?
It isn't just a cable. It is the EVSE electric vehicle supply equipment or charging station, just a portable version. My guess is that the pistol shaped connector will be the weak link. It has a moving part...the trigger also activates a switch inside it. In any case, ours is about a year and a half old and showing no signs of deterioration.
Toyota’s technical training course for the Prius Prime (see previous thread) says it’s 30,000 charges.
Yep, IIRC the PIP manual stated this as well. 2 charges per day equals 42 years. I'm not concerned. Take care of things and they will last a long time. Abuse, much shorter.
Receptacles and plugs wear with use, which eventually leads to poor contact for electrical conduction, and that leads to heat. But as mentioned, the process takes a long time.
That is amazing! I never charge every day, but if I did, in the year 2100 (82 years from now) a message will appear on the dash telling me to contact the dealer about changing the charging cable. Of course, if I add level 2 charging, I won't get that message for 160 years. What a fantastic car!
I guess that is doable as it appears to be attached with four screws. The owner's manual only discusses "Charging cable life span".
Well, if you do replace it think of me when you throw out the origional, I'll pay shipping. All agree, the ends will wear from repeated use, in 42years, the cable itself a lot longer.
I have a (short /12-15' ish) spare heavy cable/nozzle, from after installing a longer 25 footer. Probably only been used 850/950 times. Does that make me a pakrat? .
