Just wondering GZ1 2018 for Break Actuator warranty extension - extension available for Gen II? I wish someone with advanced access to Toy service can help looking up?
At this point I am thinking following: - Is it worth dealing with Toyo on this? - Is it worth dealing with Dealer on this? - Is it worth going through bad replacement job, in case it's replaced? - Is it worth over all replacement experience?
No updates as of today. They will tell you no if you're outside the ZG1 extended warranty. Talking with a NHTSA safety engineers today, they may be about to lay down the hammer but they need a few more cases. Since the ZG1 warranty just ended on Dec 31, 2017, it may take a few months. If you plan on keeping the car, you have to replace it. It's a safety critical part.
I reported mine and have been on many FB pages requesting that others report theirs even if it was fixed under the warranty extension. I think the biggest issue is most did not report because it was fixed....
the original extension was so long, it is hard to believe nhtsa will do anything. but they did on old airbags, so it will be interesting to see. it has been 2 months since the post, i wonder how many complaints they have received.
I just reported mine to the NHTSA, the actuator went out a few weeks ago. Luckily it happened backing out of the driveway and not on the highway. No way I was paying $1200 for a new one so tried my luck with a salvaged unit and so far so good. Hopefully there will be a recall coming for this in the near future before people die when their brakes fail.

It’s hard to imagine that a Toyota will extend the warranty (again) on the actuator. After all, a company does have to draw the line at some point. I will hate having to spend $$$$ on this part, but in the end my Prius has been incredibly good to me so I will probably do it. Having owned European and American cars I have to say I’m actually very surprised at how Toyota extends warranties to cars over 10 years old. Unheard of on the Euro cars I’ve owned....those damn things drained my pockets with all the crap that went wrong on them. I think Toyota has spoiled us all when we “expect” anything that goes wrong to somehow be covered at their expense lol.
In 2005, Volvo performed warranty work on my 1975 Volvo 245DL. That's 30 years after the car was built, and 20 years after the warranty extension expired. They replaced $1400+ in parts, and paid labor on top of that. I had paid $45 for the car. No, not $4500, $45.
Wow! I’ve never owned a a Volvo, though their safety record makes them interesting. I had no such luck with the BMW’s and Mercedes brands. And don’t even get me started on Range Rover—worst vehicle ever. If those owners expected Land Rover to fix stuff outside of the warranty the way Toyota owners do, they’d go broke in no time lol!
Well, Here is my argument regarding this. It's not up to Toyota as if NHTSA decides a recall needed then it will have to be addressed... Look at FCA/Ford/GM/Mitsubishi lost millions/billions $$$$ in last few decades due to defective parts or components and recall costs associated with it. That's growing pain for company size of Toyota in US economy where safety regulations are in place and we have higher speeds on the roads due to development of road infrastructure unlike Europe and other parts of world in last 50+ years. The higher speeds can lead to fatal accidents even with minor component failures.
Thanks for the link-I just filed a complaint. My brakes have now failed twice-once in reverse (no damage) and once forward (caused an accident). Have been trying to figure out what to do about getting this addressed. Just found this forum.
I hope so, I just bought a 2006 prius not knowing too much about it and you can hear the actuator go off ever 10 seconds
The complaint page just gives me this: I just had to replace my actuator and would be happy to file a complaint. Is there another way to do so?
2007 Toyota Prius I started having intermittent problems with my breaks in 2016 Aprox 130k mi. The car would lock up, the breaks would disable, and the dash would Christmas lights. It would then disappear after a few minutes with no record of it happening in the codes. I took the car into clearwater Toyota various times and they would refuse to fix anything given my explanations, descriptions of what was happening, and my fear that the car would fail and cause an accident. They’re answer was unless their mechanic can recreate the problem alone in the car while driving, they would not be responsible for any repair and there is nothing they can do and they sent me home. I continued to return a few times through the years in hopes to find an answer and never received resolution. With time the problem became more frequent but couldnt be recreated on command until now the car is always stiff, no pressure in the breaks pedal, the abs lights and a beeping sound that always plays. Toyota is quoting almost $4k in repair that is a rediculous cost. I’ve been reading the forums and talking to former Toyota mechanics and found out there was an extended warranty on the abs actuator but it since has expired. However, I’ve had the issue while it was active and no one fixed it. I don’t know what to do, but I feel Toyota was trying to avoid the repair costs and now want me to cover out of pocket. This issue seems to be prevalent in many of their vehicles. It should not have been an extended warranty but a full on recall. The issue being intermittent and not registering codes is very dangerous. Thanks for the link to NHTSA. I have just placed a complaint and hope this will help everyone who may be experiencing the same issues. In the meantime, I’m going nuts trying to fix this problem.
