technology always affects jobs. they have plenty of time for retraining, just like coal miners.

I do wonder how our society could handle the Star Trek like universe where human labor is nearly unnecessary.

Capitalism wasn’t built for that scenario

Sort of like the continuation of the service and retail job implosion, we were told those things were our future now that we don’t build anything and no one can afford the taxes to farm.
Then we built too many stores for the population of the area.

Now folks are loosing jobs because a service economy isn’t sustainable and our systemic levels of folks permanently out of the workforce is growing.

Same thing is starting to happen to the high end and “experience stores”, those are the future now that retail and service is dead but again, we are overbuilding as everybody chases the dwindling dollars left, which is again leading to disappointing results.

Which will be followed by layoffs with no new obvious new job source.

Systemically only about 33% of our population needs to work for everyone to be fed, clothed, basic needs met and have a car.

What do we do with the rest?

 

can't speak to that, unemployment here is 3.5% and no one in retail speaks english.

About 60% of the working age population is employed, 3% are unemployed and the rest are ???

 

Remember, unemployment statistics don't count those who have dropped out of the labor market, those in the "gig" economy that are being paid under the table, and those who are under employed.

I wish i was only working between 16 & 22hrs.

I’ve heard it phrased like this: if you don’t like change, I’ll keep your raise and performance award.

Somehow people then see the benefit of change.

Also the number of 16-22 year olds is exceedingly small as a percentage of the population,
people don’t have kids like they used to.

 

true, but how about as a percentage of the 'working population'? also, people are retiring earlier.
i haven't worked since i was 58. (some say i never worked)

 

My folks on the other hand have worked till expiration out of necessity, my mom is still full time into her 70’s

 

The robots making (the largest % of parts for) so-called US made cars are made by german robots.

Got to go on a tour of the Tesla manufacturing plant in Freemont Cali, & it was pretty slick. No workers comp claims, no overtime ... what more could a manufacturer ask for ... It was like watching the AI movie, Terminator, only it's rev1.

It is interesting to hear the viewpoint of a Korean union chief, but that's about as far as it goes. Maybe more work for our factories here is what I am hearing.

Yikes. Really. Capitalism was built exactly for this. Those socialist empires like russia have it much worse.

The US is a mixed economy, and does a poor job with displaced workers. More cars and light trucks were built in the US in 2016 than in any year in the last couple of decades (there was a decline last year as there will be this one). Productivity in 1990 was much higher than in 1950, and it is much higher than that today. Jobs in auto manufacturing in the US will be lower in 2050 than today no matter how many ludites try to smash the machines. ;-) Unemployment is much lower today in the US than it was a decade ago, but another recession will happen. Automation makes recessions less deep. Either wages need to be as low as chinese factories, or american workers need to be more productive.

They cared about asian company profits ;-) Automation means higher productivity (very little is done with actual robots, but much has been done with automation). The assembly line made cars affordable to the masses ;-) Definitely there were more buggy whip jobs before the model T, but are these the good jobs we want today?

That's kind of funny. All those robots and tesla workers are less not more productive than workers say in the toyota camry or truck plant in the US.

Tesla's management is far better than GM's but Tesla probably needs at least anouther year to get manufacturing of the model 3 down. They still are programing the robots. I think they can do it, but production would be higher today if it was less automated ;-)
