I had a similar incident with my wife's old Pinto back in the mid 80's. I was at an appointment and came out to find a puddle of gas under the car. Had to call the Miami fire department to hose down the area and have the car towed to a repair shop. Yikes...

I used to think the Ford Maverick looked a lot like a larger, better looking Pinto. that model faded away too,

My dealer has a "Mezzanine" balcony overlooking the workshop area, adjoining the waiting lounge - you can sort-of see your car being worked on.

It's a little upmarket from the FORD experience - where they offered you instant coffee and dry bikkies - and you just waited.

My TOYOTA dealer had hot muffins (savoury or sweet) with Pod Coffee last time I was there - baked on the premises I was told. It's the same person who caters for staff lunches. Several copies of the newspaper plus magazines, TV etc too. I did the difficult SUDOKU in the newspaper - finished just before they called me to say my car was ready.

A couple weeks ago, I stopped in at my dealer to get wiper blades because I heard here that the Toyota ones are really good. (And so far, so good, btw.) They used to have free donuts and coffee. They still do, but now they've added what looks like a full blown snack bar with a barista. I should have gone over to see what (if anything) they charge for that stuff, but then I might have walked away with a bunch of calories I didn't need.

Not jealous, much... Mine has auto pod coffee/tea full stop! If you look to be in need, someone may offer to work it for you. Then again, they could just ignore you. Don't think it's a race thing, just an age discrimination.

Mine has free coffee and biscuits, but the coffee comes in big cups (not mugs) which are difficult to hold when you have a hand tremor, so I have to decline. I might take my own mug when I go for my second service in two weeks time.

You could ask for a bigger saucer, I suppose.

You get a saucer, it's when I pick the cup up off the saucer I struggle.

I always thought mugs were for coffee and tea cups & saucers were for tea. But what do I know?

Agreed - but I generally drink tea from a mug too, on the odd occasion I have tea. I'm more into coffee.

My elderly mother was never drinking enough fluid - dehydrated severely a few times. But she'd say she had 5 cups of tea a day and a glass of water every time she went past the kitchen. Trouble was her tea cup was a tiny fine china cup - wide at the top so it cooled quickly - but most of the volume was above the level of the tea - a bit like this cup:

And the glass of water - was a shot glass - yes, with water!

We actually have a bunch if decorative tea cup & saucer pairs that my mother collected over the years. When my parents passed, nobody else in the family wanted them.
My wife, originally from Virginia had never seen anything like them and liked them. They are displayed in a china cabinet that belonged to my grandparents.

That, sir, is quintessentially 20th Century British practice. Your wife's heritage must be of native British stock. That century, they certainly got around the world a fair bit!

Let me be clearer, I meant you could try sipping direct from the saucer. Not unheard of.....

My mother taught me that was the "done thing" when my tea was too hot to ... leave for school in time o_O. I don't any more - because I drink coffee from a MUG.
