My abs, brake light and check engine lights are on on my 2003 prius. The brake pedal is really stiff and the rear drum brakes dont work. I diagnosed it myself and got the code P0420 for the catalytic converter, but i dont see how that could be the problem? Ive taken it to shops and they told me to take it to a dealership but i really dont want to pay an arm and a leg for just a diagnoses. Anyone have any tips or knowledge?
Hi , You need the codes from the brake computer ... the code reader you used did not pull them. You can get them with a simple jumper wire and counting light blinks ... search the many other posts about how. Cheers, -Chap
Welcome to Prius Chat . In addition to getting the codes read, what shops have you taken it to that have been less than helpful? How many miles on your Prius? Any recent maintenance or other potential cause for the lights coming on? Keep us posted .
It just reached 200,000. I had the brakes done the day before, but i was driving down a mountain when a nice sized rock hit the under carriage, about 20 minutes later the problem started. It was local shops, they said they didnt have the correct tool for it
Did the shops look for damage underneath? Did they find anything? Any loose or frayed wires? You up in Nor Cal?
None of them said a thing, ive also had the brakes inspected and they just say it looks fine. Im in socal
2 shops down south that could help you out are @Avi's Advanced Automotive or @sfv41901 / @RightOnTime with hybrid pit. First thing I would do is look under the car for damage given it sounds like that may have happened.
You'll likely save time for yourself and for Avi or sfv if you can tell them what your trouble codes are when you contact them. -Chap
