In San Francisco you could go to Luscious Garage, or in Berkeley you could use Art's Automotive. Both are excellent shops that know how to deal with used Prius keyfobs.

    Hello!
thank you for posting this very detailed guide! I bought my Prius from the dealer in 2008 (it's a 2009 Prius) and am still using the 2 SKS Fobs (silver logo) that came with the car. One has stopped working remotely and so I'm trying to use the other one as the host to reprogram the faulty FOB.

I've been following the instructions, but with no success. I get all the way to step 9 - my question is, when do you know to move from Step 9b to 9c? How do you know if 9b has worked or as the instructions say: "indicate success"?

    thank so much!

Oh Happy Chicken Dance!! It works. Thank you usnavystgc

8 years ago after losing my fob I purchased a new smart chrome fob over the internet. Both a Toyota dealer and a non dealer repair shop could not/would not program it. Then I bought a new fob from the dealer who also programmed it for a total cost of over $300.

I kept the one purchased from the internet, and recently when the original original key fob was too beat up, pulled out that internet fob, and used the usnavystgc dance. SUCCESS!!!! Thank you!

Moral of the story: once program attempts are made, fobs CAN be reprogrammed despite what dealers say. But I won't beat up the dealer too much. They have otherwise been good.

    Thanks again

What do I try if I know I have a new battery in the old fob and nothing happens when I press the buttons? I am able to start the car with the new fob inserted into the dash now/.

Thank you! I ran into two problems: (1) In part A steps 1 thru 4 did not work for me and it was not clear to me that "dash light on" meant on solid, not blinking, so I wasted time going on to other steps. It turned out I was not doing step A2 fast enough. Once I did the in/outs of A2 at a faster pace , then step 3 worked to put car in program mode with light on solid. (2) My second problem was at 9(b)/9(c). The problem was that 9(c) has to be done within 3 seconds of finishing 9 (b), but there are more words in 9 (b) after the actions are described than I could read and digest in 3 seconds, so by the time I got to 9(c) more than 3 seconds had passed. I therefore offer this re-write of the Chicken Dance:

Chicken Dance with Minor Revisions to Make it More User Friendly (I hope)

    PROCEDURE A
This procedure (steps 1. through 5.) is to be used for both the black and chrome logo key fob. This will program the fob to Start/stop engine while it is inserted into the key port. All new fobs should be programmed for this regardless of logo or SKS functionality (SKS=Ability to drive the car with fob in your purse or pocket, not in the dash slot).

You can copy all of this text onto your clipboard and then paste it into your word processing program to print it out.
    -------------------
    1. Get into the car, close and unlock all doors and ensure the car is off
    2. Insert old fob (your fob that currently works) into slot and remove it 4 times in a row fairly quickly, and insert it a fifth time but leave it in there!
    2. Open and close driver door 6 times fairly quickly.
    3. Remove old fob from slot. You hope that car is in programming mode at this point, which will be indicated by the red car-shaped dash light staying on and not blinking.

    A. If red dash light is NOT on solid: you failed to get into programming mode. Go back to step 1 and try the procedure at a different pace (faster or slower)

    B. If light is on solid, proceed to step 4.

    4. Insert new fob and leave in the slot. Watch the blinking red anti-theft light on the dashboard. When it stops flashing and goes dark, your new fob is all set. This may take up to a full minute.
    5. Remove the new fob and you're done with the START/STOP portion of programming ( if you have SKS, proceed to PROCEDURE B don't have SKS, proceed to PROCEDURE C).

    PROCEDURE B
This procedure (steps 1. through 10.) is for chrome logo key fobs and vehicles with SKS functionality

Lock/unlock doors remotely + SMART KEY functionality
    --------------------
    1. Open the driver door and leave it open with no fob in slot (ensure the driver door is unlocked). Other doors can be locked or unlocked, it doesn't matter.
Complete step 2 within 5 seconds
    2. Insert old fob into slot and remove it twice.
Complete steps 3. and 4. within 40 seconds of completing step 2.

    3. Close and open driver door twice.
    4. Insert and remove old fob once.
    Complete steps 5., 6., 7. and 8. within 40 seconds of completing step 4.
    5. Close and open driver door twice again.
    6. Insert old fob in slot and close door.
    7. Without pressing the brake, press power button, wait a second, press it again, wait a second, press it a third time to turn car back off.
    8. Remove old fob from slot. You'll be in "add mode" at this point. Within 3 seconds, the car should lock and unlock doors to verify it is in add mode. (the precise number of times the car locks/unlocks the door is model specific - but it should do it at least once). If it does not cycle the locks, return to step 1. otherwise proceed to step 9.

Steps 9.a. and 9.b. should be started within 40 seconds of completing step 8.
9a: Press and hold the Lock and Unlock key (simultaneously) on the OLD/MASTER fob. (a couple of seconds should pass and the locks will cycle once. If you do not get this cycle, it is likely due to a weak CR 2032 battery in your fob. Replace the battery in your old fob and try again).
9b: Press both the Lock and Unlock key (simultaneously) on the NEW fob. Hold for about 1.5 seconds then immediately (within 3 seconds)..
9c: press the lock key on the NEW fob. If successful the lock/unlock will cycle once indicating success (It may take a while for the lock/unlock cycle. I've seen it happen just as I was ready to say, "well, it didn't work". If you wait for a long time (a long time being more than a minute) and get no cycle at all, complete step 10. and test to see if the SKS functions of your new fob work. Remember to put old fob outside the car or else test of whether new smart key can start the car without being in slot in dash would be meaningless).

Several users have reported it being necessary to execute 9b step twice before doing 9c, but most do not find this to be true. If your first go-around does not succeed , try it again and execute step 9b twice then 9c. You may be able to just do it over from 9a onward if your car is still in “add” mode, rather than going all the way back to step 1 of Part B.

9d. - If you need or want to program another "new" fob, repeat steps 9. a. 9.b. and 9.c. for the next new fob. If done programming fobs, proceed to step 10.

    10. To end this programming, open then close the driver's door.

To test whether you have successfully programmed SKS mode, put the old fob outside the car and close the door, then try to start the car without putting the fob in the slot.

    PROCEDURE C
This procedure (steps 1. through 13.) is for black logo key fobs and vehicles without SKS functionality

    1. Open the driver door with no fob in slot and the doors unlocked.
    2. Insert old fob into slot and remove it twice within 5 seconds.
    3. Close and open driver door twice.
    4. Insert and remove old fob once.
    5. Close and open driver door twice again.
    6. Insert old fob in slot and close door.
    7. Without pressing the brake, press power button, wait a second, press it again, wait a second, press it a third time to turn car back off.
    8. Remove old fob from slot. You'll be in "add mode" at this point.
    9. Car should lock and unlock doors twice to verify it is in add mode.
    10. Press and hold both buttons on new fob simultaneously for a second and a half.
    11. Within 3 seconds, press just the lock button on new fob.
    12. Car should respond with one quick lock/unlock to verify that the new fob is all set. If the car responds with two lock/unlocks, that means it didn't work. Either try again, your fob is bad or, you have too many fobs assigned to the car.
    13. To end this programming, open then close the driver's door or put fob in the slot.

Here are the part #'s for the fobs:
OEM Fob Part # for smart access is 89994-47061
OEM Fob Part # for non-smart access is 89070-47180.

PS: Practice these steps first (dry run).

I have a 2006 Prius that came with one fob. The fob only works as a non-SKS fob (i.e. must insert into slot to start, must press unlock on fob to unlock.) So I assumed the car didn't have SKS functionality. When looking further at the original fob, I noticed it had the silver logo on back and is part number B31EG (from the inside). So I assume this is an SKS fob. So my question is, was this fob a replacement where they bought an SKS fob for a non-SKS car (will that even work?), or was this SKS fob improperly programmed to an SKS car? I've lived with the non-SKS functionality for this long and since a non-SKS fob is only $60 on Amazon vs $150 for an SKS fob, I would rather add an new non-SKS fob to may be an SKS car. Will that work? How do I tell for sure if it is an SKS car (without looking at the fob?) Thanks for your help.

Thank you, @usnavystgc, for these instructions! One year ago, your procedure worked for me with my 2007 Prius (as I commented above here).

Then that car got totalled, and I just bought a 2008 Prius. I'm now trying to pair my old 2007 fob to my 2008 Prius.

I think Procedure A worked. And I think Procedure B seems to work until step 9C, where nothing happens. (And I always need to execute step 9B twice, as you suggested I might.)

Is there anything I might be doing wrong that would cause 9C not to work? Or is re-pairing my 2007 fob to my 2008 Prius completely impossible because the fob itself is no longer fresh and identity-less straight from the factory?

(Yes, I did read your "This procedure is for brand new fobs purchased from a Toyota dealer" note but am hoping that mine still counts since I did originally purchase it as a spare blank new fob from a Toyota dealer and would think it would be able to be used more than once.)

Thanks so much for your help.

The point of that note is that the fob must be new, unused, virgin fob. Once it has been paired with a car, it is no longer new, unused or virgin. It can be made to start the car, but you can't get SKS functionality. Not sure about the lock/unlock using the buttons.

I am brand new member and just bought a used 2005 Prius a month ago. It comes with only 1 fob and I decided to buy another one on eBay.

Today, I try to do "chicken dance" by myself and got stuck at step 5 Procedure A. The anti theft light is blinking pretty fast at the beginning of step 5 for 5-10 sec then it slow down but never go off. I waited for 5 minute to make sure.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks all.

I went through all the steps to program my new smart key replacement fob. It cycled everything as instructions said it would while in the sks add mode, but it still doesn’t lock and unlock my doors. The only thing it will do after completing add mode is start the car with it in the slot. Any assistance would be so appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi and welcome to PriusChat.

It the "new" (to you) fob brand new from a dealer/locksmith and never been paired to any other car? Or is it someone's used fob you bought on eBay/CL?

    Hi dolj,

Thanks for the reply. I bought mine on ebay, the listing is from yourkeylessremote (sorry, I couldn't post the link just yet).

The condition is "Condition: Brand new case, with oem factory electronics. Also comes with a working battery and has been tested."

Numbers on the remote : FCC ID: MOZB31TG Part No. 89994-47061

It doesn't really matter that the case is brand new, and that doesn't tell you whether the electronics are brand new, I suspect not.

I was wondering if this will enable the car to be started without the key being in the ignition?

If your car is fitted with SKS, you have a working key fob that also works by not putting the key in the slot and you purchase a brand new, never been used before, key fob with a silver logo on the back, then yes, this procedure will do this.

    Hey everybody,
I just bought a second generation 2005 with a key fob with exhausted battery: I open the door with the key and start the car with the fob in the slot.
The dealer assured me that after replacing the battery and reprogramming the fob,Prius would recognize the key in my pocket and I open the door by pressing the button on the door (SKS ? I assume). or at least be able to open the door with the remote.
I tried to follow the instructions posted here but with no luck; I don’t have a working fob.
Is there a way I can reconnect the only fob I have to the car?

No, sorry, you need a fully functional fob to program a new one, using the Chicken Dance.

If the key fob battery has been replaced, it should just work again. That would suggest that something is up with the fob you have. May be it is not the original fob or the previous owner replaced the fob with a used one then lost the original.

In any case, as the dealer represented that the key fob works, I think you have a good case to go back to them and have them "make it so" on their dime. You need to get a least one fully functional key fob, then you can make a second as a spare (highly recommended).

new to forums. In relations to the FOB programming, I recently purchased a silver logo Prius key fob but it appears to be a later model prius then what I have.....which is a 2005 2nd Gen. The key fob I have appears to be a 2010 maybe? Can that still be programmed? I wouldn't think so as the key fob appears wider.

The Gen3 keyfob is not compatible with Gen2 vehicles. Most (not all) Gen3 keyfobs are labeled "Denso 14ACX" on the bottom line of the label below the silver logo. Gen2 keyfobs don't have any printing on the outside
