My 2006 now has over 145,000 miles and has recently had its first non-routine maintenance that I can remember with the replacement of wheel bearings and coolant pump, plus coolant drain and fill of both coolant loops. Total cost ~$1,100. I am also changing over to a reusable engine air filter: Upgr8 U8701-3902 Hd PRO OEM Replacement High Performance Dry Drop-in Panel Air Filter Red Previous routine maintenance: spark plugs and PCV valve ~$40 Plus tires and oil/filter changes windshield wipers
Just joined the forum and figured I'd post my novel of my Prius experience. 2006 Prius Touring w/ Nav 119K miles Bought it from Toyota Dealership that only had 1 owner. Bought it in 2014 that only had 55k miles on it at the time. I've replaced 12v battery once Inverter Water pump replaced at around 90k miles Combo Meter also replaced around 110k miles Just replaced the Hybrid Battery at 119k (think age killed the beast) Bought remanufactured battery from Cardone and local mechanic installed. Battery has warranty 3 yrs/36k miles. I'm averaging about 45 mpg, with the new battery and possibly because I'm trying my hardest to see what I can get, I'm averaging 48MPG this tank with replaced Hybrid battery. Replacing both HID bulbs that I just bought, should be coming in tomorrow. Ive been riding with only 1 headlight for a while so figured its time to replace those. Also replacing cabin air filter since Im tinkering, doubt thats ever been replaced. I don't think the brakes have ever been replaced and working perfectly still! (knocks on wood) Stock JBL speakers and radio all working perfectly. Have oil religiously changed every 3k miles I'm really surprised how well the interior holds up compared to some newer low cost cars like Kia. My steering wheel barely looks worn and I've never had a cover on it. My leather interior has no tears and barely any wear. Although the original owners opted for this special gel built into the leather seats that lets you glide across the leather easier so it doesn't wear out as much....they spared no expense! Still owe about $4k on her but will be paying that off in March w/ a bonus. Can't wait to finally be without a car payment for a little bit. I feel 119k is low miles for a Toyota car, but the age definitely got to my Hybrid battery. Was hoping to pay it off before I ever needed to do that but its a done deal now. I hear the really only major thing to worry about aside from normal maintenance is the brake actuator so fingers crossed that doesn't pop up soon. I'm not gonna lie I was a little shaken up when my hybrid battery failed recently but I gotta say, I was still able to drive the car around where I needed to go till I took to shop, and once I decided what I wanted to do and they ordered the part, its crazy how just plug and play the Hybrid battery is compared to trying to rebuild and engine or transmission. Having had much newer cars in the past, I was truly surprised how much tech this 2006 Prius had. Granted, this Prius was fully loaded so that may vary but I've been happy with what this car had built into it that long ago. I kinda like the Prius V...in a couple years never know I may just look into that and keep this one in the fam as a 3rd vehicle. Prius Prime sounds cool too! Hope this helps! Here’s my 100k mile rollover on 2/12/18. My 07 is 11 years old now. It gets 47mpg in the winter and last summer it was averaging between 51/52 mpg. Original hybrid and 12v battery still working fine. I’ll replace with green bean remanufactured hybrid battery once mine fails. I’ve seen online one 1997 prius still driving around on the original hybrid battery 20 years later so its worth sticking with for awhile.
With your low mileage, it's better you buy a new Toyota battery when yours fail. Or buy a reconditioning kit now before it fails
Agreed, start looking at your hybrid battery options head of time Scott56 wherever you live to know what options you have when the time comes. Fingers crossed, you get as much life as possible out of yours. I was a little blindsided that mine needing a need Hybrid battery at only 120k miles on my 06. From what I read its not the miles that gets it, its the age.
I'm new to Prius Chat, but I've got a 2005 Prius with 165000 miles on it. The only things I've had to replace on it were the 12v Auxiliary battery, the tires, the breaks, and standard maintenance. I am getting ready to buy a Prius Prime shortly, as I'm ready for a new car updated audio and cellular integration features, as well as safety features. I'm looking forward to using less gasoline. Usually, I get 47 mpg in my normal commute miles. The hybrid battery is still going strong.
Manufactured 11/03 154, 235 Miles. Bought it used after it was stored for 2 years (guy died in his house and car was in garage, he was not discovered for 2 years). Bought it in 2016, had 57K miles on it, and paid $11,2300. Have hit tons of animals with it due to it being quite and living in the country. (2 Birds, 2 Dogs, 1 Alligator, 1 Raccoon, 1 possum) Have had following replaced due to animal strikes: 4 front bumpers with plastic grill guards, 2 radiator supports, 1 radiator, Both head lights, 1 hood latch). Missing the plastic under engine covers, destroyed them when I hit the gator, never found a good replacement. Was hit bay a pickup while parked, Had following changed due to that accident (Passenger front and rear doors and speaker wiring harness, Passenger front panel quarter panel). Recalls performed: Dash recall for it just turning off while driving Parts replaced: Oil filters always Toyota brand, Cabin filers (now K&N) engine filter (now K&N), Oil (Valvoline) , inverter coolant pump and coolant, Radio antenna (original was stolen at Walmart), Tires (Firestone brand works pretty good around here), MFD was replaced last month due to mine just went black. Uses: travels 42 miles 5 days a week for work. Used for long trips due to good gas mileage. Still get around 43 mpg if driven at speed limits, Cruise control and stereo functions still work from steering wheel. Other than all that, I would buy a newer Prius in a heartbeat.
144,203 miles and no major issues. I haven't been on the forum much lately - this darn car is just boringly (wonderfully) uneventful. Might have lost 2-3 mpg average but I stopped trying hard at chasing mpg a long time ago - so it could be the driver more than the car. Other than the usual oil & filter changes, air filter changes & tires, I've done the transaxle fluid and the dealer replaced a rattling water pump. They had already done the inverter pump recall separately. Tire shop checks the brakes at every rotation and I've yet to need a brake job. It's been so reliable I feel like I've gotten complacent about things that should be done at the 100K+ stage. Might need to tackle the spark plugs one of these days.
As best I can remember, yes. But when I started watching YouTube videos about it I thought 'this looks really familiar'. Might be from when I did it on my Odyssey though. I'd check my Toyota Owners service record but the website seems to be unavailable the past two days I've been trying.
Too funny, I finally got back in to my service history and see that I "Replaced spark plugs, Replaced PCV valve, Changed ATF" in June 2016 at 119,600mi. Well now I have an extra set of plugs on hand.
Other than regular maintenance items, tires, oil changes 12 volt battery etc, my first failed part was the coolant pump at around 96000 miles. I hadn't done the recall so I got it done free at the 96000 mark. Mild climate on the central California coast so I hope the Hybrid battery will continue to perform for a long time. Best car i've ever owned!
118000 miles Won't part with it though it has met more than a few poor drivers. Just because my 05 is small is not a reason for denting it but parking lot drivers are terrible. First real problem began last August with the mileage dropping significantly. Now in mid winter down to 22mpg. Toyota dealer says the hybrid batteries can't be checked which sounds odd to me. Would like to replace the 12V if I can find a list of online, reputable battery dealers. The local mechanic says no problem with the 12V but I have my suspicions.
The "best" 12 volt battery is at the dealer and has a 84 warranty. (Be optimistic, it might make it 84 more months!) Thanks The last battery purchased was not from the dealer and less expensive. That was five years ago in West Michigan.
I don't recommend buying one of these kits for cars over 10 years old. The cost of the equipment ($700) will be around 20% of the car's value if it's over 10 years old. It also doesn't prevent the battery from failing, so you could end up with the equipment and buying a new battery later. It just helps "prolong" the battery from failing. But you can get more info at hybridautomotive.com. They make the reconditioning "prolong" equipment.
