New 2015 Two owner - thoughts on lifetime oil changes

Interesting. I bought my 2017 Prius in September. I asked the dealer about the service interval because I purchased the extended warranty and it includes all the service for 3 years. Dealer told me 16k km or 12 months.

 

The US gets 2 years of service included with the purchase, Tire rotation every 5K miles & oil / filter change every 10K miles.

 

4th Gen Canadian oil change interval is 16K km or 12 months, inline with the states. 3rd gen Can is 8K km or 6 mo's.

 

Do it yourself. You have no idea what kind of service and quality you will get. And you should change every 5000. For the balance to the 200k mark will cost you a cool $1050 or less. And you get the benefit of doing a regular checkup yourself, looking for oil leaks, fluids, general condition, etc. Oil changes take 20 minutes or less. That will save you time. You can't even get to a service writer in 20 minutes at any dealer. AND you don't need to worry about the empty promises and small print in this deal. Hidden gotchas? From a car dealer? LOLOLOLOL. ROTFLMFAO

 

+1 on the Mobil 1. 5 times a year. 5 x 20 minutes is 100 minutes or just over 1.5 hours total invested (More time to kick the dog or squeeze your girl friend). $30 or less your cost per change. You know the filter got changed. You know the plug was tightened. You know it wasn't over-or under-filled. You know what kind of oil was used. You actually know the oil was changed. I have seen you tube videos of dealers who drove the car to the back for an hour and never did any work -- a dealer pinching pennies later may not want to give you what some salesman pitched in a deal he had no part in. You know, the 499 other guys in the network that didn't make that "promise."

 

DIY'ing, I JUST about forgot to put the new filter in, more than once. They should make it foolproof: housing CAN'T be installed without filter.

 

Why no dealership or quick oil change places have never ever touched all of my cars.

 

Although that sounds reasonable it was not stated in the owners manual supplement. What is your source?

Although in the Gen 3 forum, @Locksmith has a 2017 Gen 4.I was responding to him. a little off-topic.
I could not find Canadian Gen 4 maintenance intervals.

@Tideland Prius should know, though since his wife drives a Gen 4.

The link you provided, to Toyota Canada schedules has the oil/filter change for Canadian 4th gen. You need to look at the full schedule, and click on the links Service 1 through 3. Again, that's the data I used for this spreadsheet (attached).

 

No more than two oil changes per year?
For a $500 dollar investment, I don't like those terms. Lifetime Oil Changes should mean as many as you might need. What if you take a few longer road trips? Since Oil Changes can be needed based on mileage, and mileage can be variable, if you are covering them for life, it IMO needs to be based on that. I understand they don't want people coming in for unnecessary Oil Changes, but limiting it to 2 per year? I'm not pre-paying $500 for that.

 

Congrats on your new car. I just had my 2014 oil, filter and tire rotation done yesterday. $59.xx with all fees included. With your schedule of miles and the years involved to break even, I'd get a refund. What if you trade, wreck ect? Is your $500 gone. Things change in life.

 

FYI, it's $40 just for the oil.

 

I wonder if they will play games with you. I had a set of tires installed at Costco and I went back at 5,000 miles and they would not rotate them until 7,500 because that is what Michelin said. I went back to doing it myself.

 

$500 for “lifetime” sound good. My concern is if the contract mandates the quality of oil to be used. If not, they can put most anything in there, causing problems down the road. I doubt they will document what oil was used in each service.

If the contract states they must use OEM oil for that car, if you can prove the oil in the motor is substandard, you have them for breaching the contract plus damages.

 

The trouble with oil change places is you tell them what you want them to do and they just go ahead and do all the stuff that is on their list.

I had an oil change once and they left a vacuum line off. They can create more work than what they fix.

I may have had half a dozen oil changes in my life and several ended bad.

My Prius may never see the dealer except for recalls.

 

You cannot even believe what they write on the paperwork. I took my car in for 5 K mile check & tire rotation . They said they set the tire pressures all to 32 Way too low even for recommended. Fortunately they actually set them at a much more reasonable 39 psi.

 

That's kinda surprising too; unbidden, wouldn't they set them to spec?
