PriusChat serves up photos and GIFs of cats, dogs and pratfalls. Great. I have a humble collection of images showing species or 'systems' as beautiful or evocative or whatever. Plan to dribble them out over time, hoping that others will also share what they have done or found. It would be kindly to include name of photographer or website if known.

termite mound biolumi beetles Marcio Cabral.jpg
Termite mound in African woodland. These houses are often co-inhabited by other species. In this case, bioluminescent beetles. Photo by Marcio Cabral who won some award for it.

firefly on C4 grass Radim Schreiber.jpg

A bioluminescent beetle from somewhere else by Radim Schreiber. Grasses with the C4 photosynthetic pathway have these white stripes, here demonstrated by beetle who likely does not care. Likely a female 'advertising' to males who may be nearby.

Peregrine Falcons doing it Glenn Conlan.jpg

Once advertising is over... Peregrine falcon 'husbands' need to be careful with their toes. Glenn Conlan.

Cats & dogs & pratfalls are perfectly fine, but this planet is whoo-hoo amazing and photographers are out there collecting, better than ever before.

Photos from commercial airline cockpits fascinate me:

Pilot's spectacular photos taken from an airplane cockpit | CNN Travel

Such have been criticised because pilots are supposed to be working, not out of the seat getting great camera angles. I'd agree to the extent that it could be better to just put the camera in a nice place and let it work alone.

I have a different concern and maybe someone here knows the rules. Or, I could ask at pprune.

My understanding is that whenever one pilot is away from controls (e.g., restroom break) the other needs to put on oxygen mask. In a few of cnn photos the pilot flying can be seen without mask. Are rules being strictly followed?

Cockpit windows rarely fail. When they do, everybody in row 0 is supposed to mask up and work the problem. 'Pilot photoing' is not in a good situation to return to seat and get mask and 5-point harness.

No, ya gotta parse that. Know in advance enroute weather to choose. On >8 hr flights, always go aisle. Must take walks even if blue-juice room is not your destination.

Long before 9/11 I gained access to flight deck playing ASEL card on the ground. I reset their radios and Kollsman (QFE). But my main question was show me now to use your oxygen masks?

Along with many small-plane pilots I dream that someday, both real pilots will 'eat the fish' and a call will go out for skills in back rows. Can you effing imagine?

Don't know what youse guys dream about...

In 1994, a pilot of Aeroflot Flight 593 to Hong Kong let his children do that.

    There were no survivors.

Kai Tak was a tricky landing airport at which (if asked) I would call for a sterile cockpit. Plus, you don't just come in and disconnect autopilot. Seriously.

    ==
On further review I see that the problem happened earlier and a Russian mountain got in the way. It was an en route problem.

My cockpit visit was on the ground (SLC) in a parked aircraft. Sure, I'd like to go up there in flight but if I did I'd attend to business. Promise.

I did at another time take controls on a tiny commercial flight and it was great. Arrival was normal. Dang, I wish I had me a Cessna 208 like that!

Air Disasters is a well made program for those interested in crashes and events. I didn't care until watching an episode.

If I have the right event in mind, the pilot let his children "fly" the plane for a bit, but left the auto pilot one while they did so. What he didn't know was that his son turning the yoke was enough to turn the autopilot off.

My brother in law was director at Canadian Company Pre-Owned Aircraft for quite some time. I would have enjoyed seeing some of those that were on the market. They reorganized, and he was happy about it.

I'm not fond of Brazilian Brand Regional Jets, though. AA crams people in sardine-style for 2 hour flights. The AB side of an MD80 is much nicer, at least you can stand up without getting a concussion.

    Meteoric iron Britian 1783.jpg

Before people got really good with fire, metals were copper brass and bronze. Iron ore laid about, impure and ignored.

Meteorites were purer but rare. Enough for knives for Pharaohs and the like. infalling things from space have fascinated for even longer than that. Kaaba black stone may be one, but you can't actually break off a little piece and put it in yur mass spectromer.

British Isles, 1783. Back when not many people yet believed that stones fell from the sky. Apparently such consensus wasn't reached until a few decades later, after a daylight mass fall just across the channel:
Scientists Didn’t Believe in Meteorites Until 1803

I knew that there was scientific disbelief in meteorites and meteorites until relatively recently, but didn't remember the specific timeline until looking it up just now. And the very first article found, contained the same illustration that tochatihu included above.
