Has any one else had this coil spring problem? The lower part of the rear coil spring on the passenger side is snapped on a 2005 with just under 100K. I have no idea how long it has been broken but the broken ends are quite rusted. The paint on the spring looks just fine and not chipped or flaking off. I found the broken spring while rotating the tires at about 100,400 miles. I just had the car into our our local Toyota dealer for rear brake service, etc, (at 99, 700mi) and they missed the broken spring. I was not a happy camper. The mechanic at the dealership says this is he first one he's seen.
I haven't heard about this issue before. While you are having the spring replaced, are you going to have the rear shocks replaced at the same time? Will you be replacing the springs on both sides of the rear axle or are you only going to replace the one broken spring?
Moved.... May be a freak thing. You've never curbed the car or anything right? I take my Prius "off-road" quite often and I corner pretty hard and I have not broken anything yet. I only have 92,000 miles though so I'll keep an eye on the springs. Thanks for reporting your situation, even if it was in the wrong forum. lol Because springs car wear out I would recommend replacing both as well as your shocks at the same time.
It seems to be quite uncommon...just my luck. I'm replacing both springs but not the shocks. The tires aren't showing any cupping so for now, I'm not replacing the shocks.
Gotcha. I would recommend at least testing them if you pull them off the car at some point. 100k miles is A LOT to ask for out of stock struts and shocks. I assume you know what you are doing though so I won't bug you about it.
If it were me, I'd consider it an opportunity to put in the TRD set. What's the cost difference between that and doing the minimum?
Were there handling problems as a result of the broken coil spring? How much was the replacement work?
I have 120,000 on my 05, and both rear springs are broken, i feel like a slammer, so if i find them I would replace them both. Shocks seem to be fine.
Following its annual check (MOT), my local garage mechanic just told me that my 2007 has a broken spring (107k miles). I drive rural UK roads for my daily commute and the potholes have been particularly bad this winter, which might explain it. I will get the pair replaced. The local mechanic has yet to quote. If I end up going to the Toyota dealer, I'll likely get the shocks done at the same time.
I remember now, when and how it happened. It was a bit of 'off road' over a tree root with a bit of a load in the back.
