11.6 screen remains black after car is on (maybe cold weather related)

This started happening fairly recently on colder (< 35 deg F) days. I will see if I can capture a video of the behavior next time around. Basically, when start button is pressed, foot on the brake to get to READY, the 11.6" screen does not display anything (black screen). Button presses on the side buttons register with their usual BEEP sound (Home) and the Audio on/off works as expected, however the screen remains black.

The first time this happened, I turned off the car and restarted it and it was back to normal, and same for the second time when it happened earlier a few days ago. This afternoon when it was around 20 deg F, it happened again, but turning the car off and on back again within a few seconds resulted in the same behavior. After waiting about 10 more seconds, I turned the car off and on again and the the screen behaved again as normal.

    Anyone else experience something similar?

it's 11F at my house today. I just got back from the food store and haven't had any problem with the display.

Mine seems to work at 3 degrees F, albeit slower. Touching it with a gloved hand does nothing at that temp, and reacts rather pokey with an ungloved finger. The manual mentions that gestures might not work at low temps, though a blacked out screen seems odd.

Heh, nope it was definitely on. I seriously start the car with the cell phone video camera on in case it comes up again, haha. This morning was 3 F, but no apparent issue and it hasn't happened in the last few days, so maybe not cold related. The other strange behavior that I had noticed a while back was that the audio on/off stopped responding and wouldn't turn the radio on/off, but that's only happened once and also went away after a reboot so I chalked that one off to a software glitch. I personally haven't had any issues with the screen rebooting, maybe because I don't have the car access text messages.

I started my car, gas engine turns on instantly, and I hear a tiny little plasticy click. That would be the MicroSD cover falling off the bottom of the display and onto the charge pad. Glad I heard it at all, with all that gas engine racket going on. Looks like it was never made correctly and had only one clip on one corner. I want to blame the cold, or the vibration of the ICE turning on. Probably just an el-cheapo Denso part. One more for the warranty replacement list when I bring it in.

I don't think I can buy any more cars. :(

Seriously, between this touch-screen nonsense (vs decent ergonomic/tactile knobs/sliders), the increasing trend to no spares, and the painted plastic fairings they foisted on us as "bumpers": think I need a time machine.

Remember when cars actually had screws and not clips? You know, so that the dashboard and door panels don't squeak as they age? Sigh.

I remember when they started using those tricky plastic fasteners too, beginning of the slide, lol.

I've had the blank screen at boot a handful of times. Always in coldish weather (less than 0°C). It seems to fix itself when I shift it into reverse (so the display shows the rear camera image), then when I shift out of reverse, the display is working fine for the rest of the journey.

Perhaps that helps identify the cause - or if not, provides a usable workaround?

Can we come up with a catchy name for this phenomenon? Maybe "The Prime Black Screen of Death" or somesuch?

I've never had the black screen but when it is about 0F or colder, the beige color on the map will be much darker than normal. Once the cabin warms up a bit the screen returns to normal.

I was hoping someone would be able to reproduce it. :) This is pretty much the exact same behavior I experienced the last time it happened.

When I shifted out of reverse, the problem did not correct itself for me and I had to reboot the car to get it to work fine again as the video shows. What it looks like is that there is a problem displaying the screen itself, but not the rear camera (different video source) when it happened last.

To not disappoint, here is a video when it happened on January 29th, at around 7:20 PM ET. Temperature that day was in the 30s F. It has not happened since, and I can't tell if there is a specific trigger other than colder temperatures:

Hadn't gone to the dealer to get it checked out because it hasn't been very reproducible and also because I thought it was related to the install of prestigious society's nav enhancement module, and since temps have been a bit cold, hadn't gotten to uninstall it to see if that was the cause.

Have you tried rebooting just the screen instead of stopping and restarting the car? Hold Audio button down for 2 seconds.
