Am I reading this right - oil change every 10k/12 months - & what's this about Mineral Oil?

Specifically this is the maintenance guide to a 2016 Prius C. I was looking over it this morning, and it's telling me that oil changes/filter replacements aren't needed but every 10k miles or 12 months. If 0/w20 not available use 5w20 mineral oil.

Yup -- "Mineral Oil" - but then you have to change your oil every 6 months.

    See page 56.

Probably just a translation error. As it states, if using 0W-20, oil change every 10K miles. If using 5W-20, change back to 0W-20 after 5K miles. Personally, I always use 0W-20 and change it myself every 7-9K miles (weather permitting ). Your car, your choice.

Oh, ok. I'll probably stick with my usual 5k oil change. Doesn't cost me anything anyways.

some recommend every 5k with synthetic, to avoid build up in the egr, etc.

How do you get this "free" oil change?

Yes. What about that do you NOT understand ??
I thought that the recommendation went down to 5K miles or 6 months.

Right now, it's got all that free for 2 years from the dealership I bought it from.

Sam, I'm referring to the "5w20 Mineral Oil". I can't recall ever having seen that for sale in all my years working at a dealership or for sale at any auto parts store. The first guy to reply thinks it's a translation error.

I think. They used it as a term to refer to non-synthetic oil. Dino oil does not sound as sophisticated as mineral oil.

Actually, it's sorta correct around the edges, but that's another story.

Since the OP has admitted working for a dealer, then I will skip my usual lecture about maintenance versus repairs.
If you're checking the oil level per the maintenance schedule, then the 5K oil change interval might be a little extra redundant, but if you check their work it almost certainly will not hurt anything to let the "pros" into your engine compartment.
    Me?
    I don't and won't.

My company (we used to use G3s as fleet vehicles) always sticks with a 5K OIC, and I more or less do so as well for my three personal cars.

    TIFWIW.....

You need to be careful with that.
It is 2 years of service AT THE RECOMMENDED INTERVALS.
So....in most circumstances you will only get TWO free oil changes and 4 tire rotations.

It's getting done. It helps knowing 95% of the people who work there and having grown up in the dealership - well, you kinda get a few favors from time/time. Somewhere there exists a picture of me when I was 3 days old being held by the owner (back then it was only a GM dealership). So yeah.... I'm still swing by quite a bit when I'm on that side of town. Nice to have friends. :)
