Has or does anyone change their oil by evacuating it from the dipstick instead of pulling the drain plug.

    What are your thoughts.

I bought one of these last year and it is a great shop tool. I used it on a few things and it can really be handy.

I did an experiment with my Gen 2 Prius and evacuated the oil out of the dipstick then pulled the drain plug and

didn't get more than a few drops out of the drain. I am going to try it on my new Prius when it's oil change time.

One disadvantage from the Gen2 to the Gen 4 is you still have to get under the car to change the oil filter.

It does eliminate the mess and can be used on brake fluid , antifreeze, automatic transmission fluid and gear oil.

There are cheaper versions including one from Harbor Freight.

i wonder if most sludge/debris would flow out the drain plug. whereas the vacuum might leave it sitting in the bottom of the oil pan?

Might be worthwhile for oil change only (leaving oil filter). I'd still have same concerns as @bisco tho.

And really, wouldn't you miss lying inches from a ton of steel, with a trickle of used oil nearly to your armpit?

Maybe something to do every other oil change.

It eliminates the mess and you don't have to worry about stripping your drain plug or the oil plug gasket.
I will use it on my first oil change on my 2016 Prius but will pull the drain plug and see how much comes out. When the oil quits flowing I move the hose around and it makes that sucking sound like when your milk shake is empty. It may just get more out than you can from the drain. A lot of Mercedes owners use one because their oil filter is on top. You don't have to jack the car. You could literally change oil in a suit.

They have used this system in boats for a very long time.

Some Mercedes models don't have drain plugs.

funny, I googled 2016 Prius oil change today and found a video, a guy doing dipstick suction method, with a mighty vac. But:

This seems akin to pumping transaxle fluid in from below, not for me. I'll stick to gravity, it's never let me down. No wait a sec...

Not only that, but you don't get out what oil is trapped in the filter either.

There are really near to ZERO situations where that is really better.......or as good.

Yes I have done this...back when we first got the 2010 and wanted to change the oil more frequently. Basically changed oil every 5K (or sooner) but left the filter go till the 10K spec. Worked great...especially in the winter.

You still have to change the oil filter no matter how you change your oil.
It wouldn't surprise me if the next generation of Prius comes without a drain plug.
I hear that some BMW's have done away with the dipstick and some Mercedes don't have a drain plug.
There are automatic transmissions without dipsticks also.
    Things are changing.

That's the official maintenance schedule from honda now, oil filter change only at every second oil change. However, the one dealership I've dealt with (before I threw up my hands about their chronic overfill, went back to DIY) would treat you like a nutcase if you asked them to leave the oil filter.

What I did, when DIY'ing the oil change only, was remove the filter, tip it out, reinstall it. Best of both worlds.

Save it for top up. (y)

One time, the last time a dealership did an oil change on any of our cars, I had a WTH moment when checking the dipstick overfill *, opted to bleed out a bit. I went from below, partially remove the drain bolt, till it was almost off, then held it in place and cocked it slightly to get a trickle, into a graduate. My hands were shaking by the time I got enough out though.

But that got me thinking: I'm paying someone to do something, and then going through this BS??

    * Spec for our Civic Hybrid was 3.2 liters, they routinely dumped in 4.0. Charged for it too, of course.

I have always changed my oil filter at every oil change. They used to be really cheap so now I buy them online by the case.
I have to order some for my new one, the old ones won't fit. I won't reach 5,000 until the middle of summer the way I have been driving lately. I remember old manuals talking about changing the filter every other oil change and it was a big deal for me when I went from 3,000 miles to 5,000 miles and now they are talking 10,000. Times are a changing.

I guess Honda's policy, to leave the oil filter change to every second oil change stems from a couple of factors:

    1. The premise that the oil filter is good enough to last that long, so the policy reduces expense, labour, manufacturing requirements.
    2. You've effectively cut in half the quantity of used oil filters to be dealt with.

So far, since Toyota's saying change it every time, that's what I've been doing, but still thinking on it.

For those who don't want the mess of changing the oil, try the Fumoto F103S drain valve. It replaces your drain plug and make it easy the change the oil without a mess. I installed mine on its first oil change and with the Fumoto Hose Kit, I can drain the oil into an old oil jug. With over 15,000 miles on the car, Ive had no problems of leakage and I have the same setup on my Jeep Wrangle for over 6 years with no problems either.
