I'm almost ready to get a 2009 Prius but before I do I wanted to ask owners of the 2009 Prius how their oil consumption is now. I know a lot of people don't mind topping off oil everytime they fill their car with gas but I happen to absolutely hate topping off oil, I like it when all I have to do is take it to the shop every 3k miles for an oil change. I have heard the 2010 Prius seems to have a higher rate of issues with oil consumption after 100k miles but I haven't found many mentions of the 2009 Prius having this issue. So before I go ahead with this 09 can I get some feedback on this issue from owners of 09 Prius's? Do you ever have to top it off with oil between oil changes?
welcome! i don't have one, but my daughters '08 is fine at 100,000 miles and it is the same engine. i can say that i haven't seen many complaints here. 2010 is a very different engine. how many miles are you considering, and how many do you want to keep it for?
The one I put a deposit on is at 123k miles. If I can get to 200k without having to top off oil i'd be happy. I drive around 15k miles a year.
i think you can, but of course there are no guarantees. btw, toyota recommends 5,000 mile oil change, but idk if 3k is better. i change mine at 10k (mobil 1) and it looks like brand new.
I have a 2009 Gen II (Touring) with nearly 130,000 miles on the odometer. I bought it used 4 years ago with 83,000 miles. I've not noticed any oil consumption, the dealer changes the oil & filter every 5k miles and I think the level goes down about ¼" from one change to the next, which I think is nothing to be too concerned about!
The 2009 uses a 1.5 liter engine, (code named 1NZ-FXE) while the 2010 uses a 1.8 liter engine. (code named 2ZR-FXE) They are not related to each other. Toyota NZ engine - Wikipedia Toyota ZR engine - Wikipedia My 2009 had not used any oil when it was dragged several blocks by a semi running a red light at 112,000 miles.
Like Bisco said, there are no guarantees but you shouldn't have oil consumption issues with a generation 2 Prius (2004-2009) up until about 250K + miles. I have a 2007 with 215k and it does not burn any oil between changes. The early generation 3 Prii has reports of premature oil consumption and head gasket issues.
Thanks for the responses I feel more secure about going with the 09. As soon as the financing gets approved I can drive off with it. It’s dark blue and looks beautiful, hopefully I’ll be able to post a picture soon.
We all love to see pics, so I for one am excited! BTW as you've most probably learned in other threads, getting the last model year of a design usually means all the teething problems have been fixed, and most of the wrinkles in the design have been ironed out! Welcome again, and congratulations!
Buying a high mileage car and NOT expecting to need to add some oil between changes is NOT REALISTIC. You might get lucky but the odds are against you. No matter what make or model you get.
I agree with you, but I think the trick is to get into the habit of regularly checking the oil. Same goes for the tyres too!
I bought a 09 @70k started using oil about 130k ,read posts decided to flush 16 oz of marvel oil (autozone) it flushed and cleaned oil rings ,No more oil use.
