Gee, after 9 years of feeding this thing low beam bulbs like a kid and candy, I get a recall notice that they will replace the harness and both low beam bulbs on my Prius, I complained about this since my car was less than a year old to no avail. And as a kicker, if I had happened to have kept the receipts for all the bulbs Toyota would reimburse me! Big ticket and such I keep filed, bulbs I did not. I love my Prius, but my love and faith in Toyota is less and less!
I think it's pretty cool when they figure out there was an issue and decide to go back and cover long-out-of-warranty cars for it. They put a brand new steering rack in my Gen 1 that way, shortly before the 200,000 mile mark. -Chap
The HID headlight bulbs for Gen 2 Prius were over $300 each at one time. I had mine replaced under warranty before the 36,000 mile mark.
looks like they're doing the harness and the bulbs, I hope to get mine in and see in the next two weeks
I got this letter too. It's not a recall, though, but extended warranty. Mine burned just one bulb in 100,000 miles; ironically just a week before this letter. It was easy to change (driver side). If the passenger one burns out (more difficult one), I'll take them at the offer.
I got my letter (with my VIN number on it) today and it says it applies to "certain 2010-2011 model year Prius vehicles". Looks like they will perform this warranty enhancement until Oct 31, 2019 regardless of mileage. I had one low beam bulb burn out in November 2016 and the other one burned out in December 2017 so I will have this done.
Just found this and it may be why we got the letter... Toyota Prius Headlight Lawsuit Targets Low-Beam Failures | CarComplaints.com
I've recently replaced my halogens for LEDs and am under impressed. This might be the kicker for me to go back to halogens, but am torn if I should even try HIDs.
my base model 05 was problem free compared to my loaded 08.. now that the extended warranty is done for the brake actuator and digital dash Im done with buying gen 2's and early gen 3's burn tons of oil so IDK what my next car is going to be.
. over a year ago i bought the cheapest pair of HID's on e bay for $18 (for the pair) with free shipping from china.. 12 days later i got them and had them installed in under 20 mins.. the bumper doesn't have to come off...
I got the letter, and have changed maybe 5 bulbs. I'm not enthusiastic about taking it to my local dealer. They changed the cracked dash in our Sienna under an extended warranty, and when I got it back, the alternator belt was broken and the radio didn't work. I'm not sure I want them touching the electrical system in the Prius.
