This kind of sounds silly but I noticed that when I am in the car by myself in the front seat, I don't notice the Airbag On light in the dash only Airbag Off. When someone else is with me in the front seat, the Airbag On light is on. Is this normal? I looked in the manual and it doesn't mention anything about the Airbag On light to be on even if it is only one person in the front. If this is right, then how do we know if the Airbag is really on when you are by yourself.
The lights only display the status of the passenger air bag, either on or off. It doesn't display the driver's, when you're driving you're assumed to be in the drivers seat, so that airbag is on...
It's talking about the passenger side airbags only. There is a sensor in the passenger set that detects weight.
There should be some permanent label near the light that indicates it is for the Passenger side, but it's quite faint.
The truth is, there should be an indicator light for the driver side as well. I understand they want to let you know when something (or someone) in the passenger seat is light enough to turn off the airbag (as to protect a smaller child who could be harmed by the airbag). However, an indicator light telling the driver that the airbag is on (and operational) would be god to know so when it was NOT on, you might know there is a malfunction.
Is there are separate indicator (like a warning light on the dash somewhere) that will tell me if my driver airbag is malfunctioning?
Also, since we are on airbags, make sure your car is not one that is included in the airbag recall. I had to have my airbag changes. If you don't the airbag can kill you instead of save you!
