Can't third party better designed packs be used on such cars, or even get a lithium ion chemistry in there, if people still love the Honda civic hybrid?

I think that is being done on some Prius, by a PC member designed some cylindrical NIMH modules that are currently being used on em.

Possible you share the link, please?

Visited that article om the site. Its kinda cool. You seem not to post articles in there again, or what?

Have got a '06 civic also sitting in the shop.

Owner has just driven it for just two months now; was purchased used from the USA.

Complaints right now is loss of power, when accelerating at traffic.

    Scanned the car for codes;
P060A: PCM-A/T system internal control module malfunction
    P16D5: PCM internal F-CAN circuit malfunction (PGM-Fi system-CVT system
    P16D6: PCM internal IMA-CAN circuit malfunction-CVT

So, I'm wondering can all these codes relate to a transmission and traction battery failure at once?

Honda really goofed in this civic.

Unfortunately used Civic Hybrids are one of the biggest gambles in the used hybrid market. And the cards are stacked against the buyer. The battery can be bad. Or the cvt. And if you are really unlucky, both are bad.

Just had our 08 HCH's IMA battery replaced at a dealer by warranty. Loving $0 invoice.:) Odometer reading was at 147320 and it is 9 years 9 mo old, that was just shy of expiration for 10yrs/150K miles coverage on the IMA battery. The car runs much better now and mpg has increased up from low 30 to now mid 40. My son is a principal driver of this car now, but it looks like he dose not have to purchase a new car at least for a while. For warranty work, I am sure they use rebuilt OEM battery, not a brand new, but if it last another 5 years, I am happy.;)

See the link in my signature for the new cylindrical cell replacement kit. @ericbecky here is testing one, IIRC.

Ibhave seen those before here. Problem is, can it be designed to fit in to the civic? If it can, then that's cool.

Aftermarket new Civic batteries are possible.
Hard part for Gen 2 Civic is additional buss bars needed since from the factor they are welded together in pairs.
I would opt for aftermarket assembled pack. Still will be costly.
As I said before, I'm not a fan of the Civic Hybrid.

Thanks so much. Are there aftermarket packs even available? Any links you've got?

CarDone sells a pack with new cells.
Ask at your local auto parts store.

Can only comment on the 2009 Civic Hybrid. Purchased new, had for a year; worst car I've ever owned. Terrible acceleration, terrible gas mileage, a really lousy car(see above complaints, too). Traded it in on a Prius which has been much much better.

Update since original post from June last year. We had to put down the '03 in Sep last year as the battery pack went south again and rust never sleeps. It was a fun car when it was healthy and I do like the idea of having a manual tranny with a hybrid powertrain.

    Thanks for the update.
Sorry you had to put down the 03, but all cars have their limits.

We replaced it with Subaru 2014 Crosstrek XV, 5 speed. The all-wheel drive and manual tranny were clinchers for the wife. I am intrigued by next gen Subaru hybrid though for 2019. Let's hope they get it this time, last hybrid was less than ideal.

I feel your pain. I did the same for my 2004 Civic Hybrid in January after the hybrid battery went bad (for the second time). Didn't even hit 100k. That said, I got good use out of it so I guess I can't complain too much.

Our 2008 HCH did fairly well despite having IMA battery replaced at 147320 miles at 9 years 9 mo old for free under warranty. Beside routine maintenance, only repair required for the car were CV joint ~$100 and 5 TPMS ~$800. Yeah, I spend $800 on TPMS which happens to be the most expensive repair on that car I did not really need. My son managed to total the car twice, and it had to be put down for good after the second crush, but overall, with life time average of 42mpg and no major repair bills, it was probably the most economical and surprisingly the most reliable car I have owned. In fact, my son liked HONDA hybrid well enough to buy used CR-Z with IMA hybrid system again. He really likes it.

I like the pairing of manual tranny with hybrid powertrain, however CR-Z was/is too small. I tend to use my Prius like a pick-up truck.

My boy did not get manual tranny version. In fact, he does not know how to drive a stick shift. Still with S+ power-up and paddle sifter on the steering wheel, he is getting a feel for a sporty car. Yeah, same here, I use my PRIME like a pick-up truck, but I think I will be needing a bigger car soon.
