When I bought my Prius back in 2013 it was a really modern car for me. I had been driving a 1996 Chevy Astro van. (I loved that vehicle but it was time for a new car). One of the really cool things about the new car was the Prius key fob that can open the door and start the car without taking it out of my pocket. And I have gotten very used to it. Getting in my wife's 2006 Scion and using a metal key feels so old fashioned.

But it has always bothered me that the other device I need to use is my garage door opener. It is a bigger device, the style that clips to the visor. I was keeping it in the door pocket/compartment knowing that it is a security risk because if somebody breaks into the car and takes it along with the registration to read my home address that's a big problem.

So I recently bought a key fob version of the garage door remote and now am carrying it in my pocket. Its a genie and about the size of the prius fob. I now have one more thing in my already crowded pockets and its often inconvenient to have to fish for it in my tight right front pocket when I am in front of the garage door twice a day.

I'm curious how others deal with this?

On my two priuses, I had Homelink, which could be programmed to open/close the garage door. (The buttons are on the rear view mirror.)

My new garage door (this year) has a smartphone app.

i have the small key fob garage door opener clipped to the visor. you can't really see it, and we don't have much crime around here anyway. plus, there's nothing in the house worth stealing.

That mirror needs power. If I pull off my non powered standard mirror does the newer one plug in to a power connector that is already there? or does it require wiring? Yes, I have a Prius 2013, level 3 package with the solar roof.

My neighborhood in the suburbs is pretty safe and I do park in my garage at night but I drive into San Francisco/Oakland/Berkeley every so often and there are a lot of car break-ins these days.

Yeah, if/when the garage door breaks beyond repair I will switch to that but hopefully the garage door has a few more years left.

i wonder if they make a phone app with receiver you plug the door into?

i don't know if there is wiring in the ceiling, or if it has to be run. some here have added the mirror and would know, maybe start a new thread with that question in the headline.
    also, the dealer might know.

Not plug and play, but there is power up there. I was able to install a Homelink mirror in my 2010. It just took some time with the volt meter to find some constant power. Then, a little splicing. I've also considered installing a Homelink module in the little plastic panel between the windshield and the overhead console.

You can retrofit a smart adapter to the opener. I have a Liftmaster smart door and love it. Phone is always with me, don't have to worry about someone breaking into your car with the opener inside & one less thing to carry.
