    Hello,
I just purchased a Prius 4 with the HUD. Currently the display in the windshield only shows my speed and the speed limit. When I was test driving, the sales person turned it on for me and he also put in an address in the Navigation System so I could see the turns which I did see. However, I am trying to see the HIS system and I can't figure out how to view it. The manual says to press the HUD button on the left of the steering wheel, but the button is not lit and pressing it does nothing. There is the Auto light button next to it and that is not lit as well. I also do not see anyway to turn off the HUD system since the button is not lit. Is there something I should set to get these switches to work? Thank you for any info.

Hello and welcome to Prius Chat. I shan't try and guide you myself, as I'm in UK and things over here are different from the American models - apart from the steering wheel being on the wrong side. ;)

Someone will get back to you very soon though, so just hang on from time to time and hope you don't get addicted to this forum.

As RCO indicated, you've got the steering wheel on the wrong side, and there are other international differences - BUT - with mine, you press it through 3 (or is it 5?) presses to toggle through the various available views

Thank you for your response. I do love my Prius and will probably be reading Chat regularly now. The salesperson is coming to my house today to pick up my Sienna mid row seats since I traded that in when I purchased the Prius. Hopefully he can tell me what to do or I can take it in. I can't press the HUD switch by the steering wheel and it is strange my steering wheel is on the correct side of the vehicle!!! (I watch BritBox here in AZ on my Apple TV and get confused on who is driving the vehicle.) Be a mess here in Arizona if it were on the other side, but anyway, the HUD switch just doesn't work. I don't want to say it is grayed out, because that is a computer term, but that is pretty much what it is, it doesn't function, doesn't light up. And, as a former teacher I get a little bit perturbed when my Prius tells me my score was 65/100. In schools here that is a grade of D!! I want to look at the HIS so I can get at least a B! The Prius tells me to look at the HIS to improve my score. I can see it on the main console, but it will not display on the HUD.

The score that the car awards you after even the shortest of journeys can be taken with a hefty pinch of salt! After moving my car forward and backwards on my driveway in EV (no engine use) it still only gave me 80% for a ten yard trip. It can be used as a guide to improving your driving economics, but not for any serious analysis.

FWIW on our 2016 Prius v Three I use the Hybrid System display on the upper screen and a two panel split display on the main screen for weather and navigation. I sometimes switch to full navigation mode in a town I am not familiar with or on the open road while traveling on the interstate.

When I first got the car I used the Eco Score display to try and train myself on driving the car but that drove me nuts watching the score. I find it more useful keeping the car in Eco or Ev mode on the Hybrid System display as much a possible than watching some funky score that really has no meaning to me.

Thank you. I am just learning to use the HIS. It will take me a while to understand how everything works and how I can improve my mpg. I am still trying to get the HIS on the Heads Up System, but have tried everything in the manual and nothing will get it to display.

You have to press the HUD button twice. There are two display modes plus OFF.

So starting from OFF (so nothing is shown on your windshield), press the HUD once - that's speed only. Press HUD again and it'll be speed plus the Hybrid System Indicator (the eco bar and battery display). The 2nd one is the one you want to see.

The navigation instructions will pop up only if you are under navigation guidance (i.e. you've set a destination) and only if you're in the 2nd HUD display.

Here is the problem I have. When I press the power button, the car starts and 0 mpg displays in the HUD. I cannot turn off the HUD. On the left side of the steering wheel are 5 buttons. The top 3 are lit. The bottom two, the HUD and I think the other is Auto High Beam, those are not lit and do not function. I press them and nothing happens. It is a button that doesn't work. I found HUD in two places in the menu screens, one just lets me adjust position and brightness and the other when I select it says Route Guidance/On/Off. There is no where to turn off the HUD so I can start it up again to get to what I want. Is there some way to turn off the HUD without using the little switch/button on the left side of the steering wheel? Other than this HUD issue, I just love this vehicle.

Well both will light up a green light when they're activated.

It really seems odd that the buttons don't work right out of the factory (Toyota quality control doesn't usually let stuff like this pass).

Are you able to show us a video? Start the car, show us the HUD, show us the button and you pressing the button etc.

OK, I will try to make a video. It is quite dark now, so not sure how good it will be, but I will give it a try.

It just makes it easier to understand since we're not located where you are.

Otherwise, based on what you're telling us, it sounds like the button is broken. (either loose connection or none at all)

OK, I created a video. Thanks so much for trying to figure this out. I probably will end up going into Toyota tomorrow to see what they think. But here is the video. You can see the 0 mpg on the windshield and then I moved to the buttons on the left of the steering wheel, the ones above have a blue light, but you can see the HUD switch has no light.

I didn't show myself pressing the button, but I assume that if the 0 mpg is in the display that the light should be on for the HUD showing it is active. It functions well when driving and during the test drive, it showed the speed limit and he put in an address in the Nav and it showed the turn to take. I just can't turn it off or make any changes to it. Today when I was driving it was showing me that I was going over the lane line, showed that in the HUD.

Ok that's weird. Shouldn't the green light on the HUD button be on if you can see the HUD on the windshield? Something definitely isn't right. It looks like it's stuck in the "on" position but the indicator light doesn't know it's on.

Hopefully the dealer can fixed it.

My Prius is fixed! Thank you for answering my posts and offering help. You were right, the button was stuck in the on position. What happened was that after my test drive, the dealer prepped the car for sale. During the test drive, I turned on the HUD. They did something with an alarm in the vehicle and to do that they had to disconnect some wires and then did not tighten the wires for that row of buttons. So, the HUD was stuck in On. The repair took about 15 minutes. The HUD light is now on and the vehicle and the HUD works perfectly. I have the HIS in the HUD now and I am a very happy Prius owner!

So it was a dealer inspired flaw, mine lost the screen and hvac controls, the dealer found same thing, at the port something was added but securely, silly computers.

There was comment maybe 18mths ago about some dealer installing an alarm into cars on their sales yard linked to their security system - but they didn't disconnect it properly. Never would suspect it would be the HUD circuit affected.

Good news they fixed it, and promptly.
