Prius Prime and spare tire

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Toyota lists your 2017 Prius Prime Plus as coming with P195/65R15 tires...same size tires used on Gen III Prius with 15" wheels. So unless your Dealer or Region updated to 17" prior to purchase.....

Seeing you're in Chicago, go to Discount Tire or NTB and I bet they can line you out for the correct wheel size, center bore, offset and bolt pattern. They know what they are doing. NTB set me up with some take-off snows two years ago for my 2010. The plain black wheels were the equivalent of Toyota p/n 42611-02471 (Corolla)...but I can't say these will work on your Prime...even with 15".

SpaceSavers...I avoid them like a plague. Used mine 3X prior and I don't know what scared me more...the factory jack or driving on the SpaceSaver.

I keep a floor jack, 2 stands and a full size spare in the car now....but I digress.

 

Please forgive me; my first post/reply to this post was not clear and to the point since I’m new here and I can’t post links for ease of reference.

Can you please confirm, is the linked wheel (Toyota 42611-47630) a 17” wheel that fits the 17” tire you also linked to Tire Rack (Y870C - Size: T125/70D17)?

I see you went with a donut for a spare in lieu of a full sized wheel. How has it worked out for you (though hoping you didn’t need to use it); going forward, would you recommend a donut or full size?

I totally agree with you, I rather not drive on a donut. I also rather not carry a full size tire in a smaller trunk nor rely on just road service. What I teetering between is relying on the provided road service and no spare at all and having to deal with the possibly of having no cell access on the open road and having at least a donut to get me moving. I rather change my tire than wait possibly longer for road service. I know my wife and kids would rather just wait it out and socialize at Starbucks.

The wheel size is a moving target; I see both 16” and 17” spare wheels as stock in Prius’ in recent years. I suppose with concerns reaching Toyota, they may resolve in the near future with a space saving spare. Then again that may be a hidden issue. I had a space saving / inflatable tire in a ’70 Challenger T/A that I nor any family member the car was handed down to in ~ 48 years has ever used. It probably would fail if needed now.

 

Unfortunately no: I'm just using what I read in the manuals, no esoteric knowledge of spare tires. Maybe stop by a dealership with regular 4th gen on the lot, ask to check the spare tire info, photograph the sidewall info.

 

The tire and wheel info for the prime is located in the owner's manual of the 4th gen Prius hatchbacks. Same wheel/tire fits both cars. In there, they list the full sized combo as well as the space saving donut version. Also, the same space saver tire and wheel from the later Lexus CT model fits both the Prime and the 4th gen.

 

I bought a 2016 15" wheel (which fits the Prime 15x6) from lohikaarme posted on 5/13/17 (15th button)under the Private Sales postings here on Prius Chat under the thread of "stock 2016 15" rims" which was in perfect condition, and had Costco put on a Bridgestone Ecopia 422 for another $115. then bought a black cover for it at Amazon. I travel knowing I have a full sized spare.

 

TY Perhaps somebody with a 4th Gen Prius can take a picture(s) of the donut that came with thier car and post it on PC. TY in advance.

 

Mine came with a plug in air compressor and a can of fix er flat.

 

As do all Prii that don't come with a spare. Not much help in the case of a blowout, though.

 

Aw come on, now yer just gettin' picky!! That's the majority of my flats, total tire destruction! Now I'm getting too fat and old (and bad back!) to be able to even wrestle with a bloody flat replacement. Call the bloomin' tow truck, or in Socal we have free freeway support trucks that can change tires (IF you have a spare), or help you if you run out of gas; no help if you run out of "juice", Tesla!!

I find that it's often easier to plug and pump a flat than to change it. That is, if it still has sidewalls, which generally only happens whie the car is parked.

I once had a spectacular blowout driving a friend's Honda Odyssey outside of Omaha on a 75 mpg highway (I-80). Part of the tire ripped the right rear plastic bumper cover.

 

Yep, then it's the sit and wait!

 

And the end result of that is just a tow and drop-off.

 

No in Socal, we have a freeway service that will help with flat tires and running out of gas, so it's not always bad!

Assuming there's no traffic and no sig alerts. It tool me 4 hours to drive 60 miles from LAX to Corona one Friday evening using the 91.

I choose the 15 minute wheel swap any day...anywhere...anytime. But that's me.

 

That's what the freeway service does for old decrepits like me!
Hey you should know better than to try driving on LA area freeways on a FRIDAY night!! That's when you pull into a nice restaurant, and grab a comfortable meal, til most of the Animals have cleared the freeway! Timing is everything. My son has me frequently pick him up from LAX when he's returning from a business trip; we use the carpool lane, and we get to catch up on life!!

When you are already gone from home 12 hours a day (with light traffic), both parents work, daycare, Kids and everything that goes with them? Not a choice and not happening.

To each their own...but this "old decrepit" is throwing on the spare and moving on.

 

Obviously not so decrepit! You're still in the middle of all the action; my little kid is now 43 years old, so I am in a totally different place. My back is so bad, I've got to rely on outside help to change my tire! Do you have a compact spare, or full-size?

Use the can and buy a new tire. That’s the name of the game.
