220V Prius Prime Charging Cable

Careful...

Upgrading the existing EVSE limits you to the short cord (12 ft?) and a maximum recharge rate of 2.88 kW

Purchasing a EVSE provides the option of a long cord (24 ft) and and a maximum recharge rate of 3.6 kW

The other benefit of purchasing you end up with 2 chargers... a faster one for home and another to keep in the car for opportunity charging.

 

After reading through this thread, I came away with the below summary. Does this sound right?:

* The Prime can be charged with a 220v cable
* Toyota doesn't sell a 220v charge cable
* An aftermarket Level 2 charger will work

I found a Level 2 EV Charger on Amazon made by EV Gear for $299.99, 30' cable Level 1 adapter, and Bonus plug dock. Anyway using this device? Or is there a better unit?

 

Can’t talk about the EV Gear’s quality, but it apparently puts out 3.8 kWh which is fine for the Prime’s 3.3 kWh onboard Charger.

Just realize that nearly all new BEVs have 6.6, or 7.2 kWh onboard chargers and this one would be a little “light” if you ever move on to a full BEV (would work, but would take longer to fully charge).

 

A short follow up on the Duosida after a year of use. I still love it. Absolutely no problems. Level 2 is the way to go for charging, slightly more than twice as fast as level 1.

What's the best Level 2 charger for the Prime?

 

After combing through reviews last year, I bought the LCS-20P from Clipper Creek for my Volt. It has worked great, and the customer service was fantastic. I've just used it with our new Prime once, but it worked fine. It has the capacity for either vehicle. If in the future you plan to get a car that charges faster, you may want a bigger charger.

 

I would buy the cheapest 16 amp UL rated one I could find. I have a Leviton evr-green mini.

 

Having a short cord can be quite a sacrifice for so little money saved, on something you'll use so frequently.

Think about if you ever want to charge from the driveway or share with a second vehicle...
