I was watching a YouTube video on the Prius Prime and the person was talking about the replacement cost of the rear hatch/liftgate. Over $3k!!! And that's not even including the glass. Basically if we get rear ended we're screwed....

It IS carbon fibre reinforced plastic and not the standard aluminium or steel material.

CF cracks and does not dent so in a minor collision, you may be able to reuse it (just replace the hinges that got bent) but in a higher speed impact, it'll crack and require replacement.

Man that's what worries me is those harder impacts. $3k+ just sounds harsh. I also read that those lower corner lights cost $500-$700 each!

Again, consumers want those high tech toys and features and it'll cost you/them/us.

The headlights are about $1,600 each. They are down from $5,000 each side (10 years ago on the LS600h L).

Any repair on an Advanced model will be pricey with the ICS sensors, BSM/RCTA radar, corner lights, CF hatch... or the front with the ICS sensors, corner lights, foglights, re-aligning the radar...

Have you seen the bill of another PC member with a frontal collision?

So this happened... Ouch | PriusChat

    $6,482

Another member had a $12,000 repair. Here's the bill

Yup. And these are for Toyota parts. Can't imagine the cost for a BMW or Lexus with the same features and higher labour rates.

My buddy has a newer CRV and those are not even half of what these repairs cost.

It doesn't have a CF hatch, ICS/IPA or active grille shutters. Honda Sensing is on EX and higher and I think the LED headlights is only on the top Touring trim.

If you're rear-ended, you should just worry about paying your deductible.

True, but the costs the insurance company has to pay over time means they are gonna raise your rates. Plus if your guilty of the accident....not good.

Yeah I'm impressed with Honda's new products. The CR-V and Pilot look really good especially when up against the RAV4 and Highlander. Also, on the CR-V, Honda's designed the screen well and doesn't stick up too far (like Mazda's or the Germans).

Insurance companies will be raising rates anyway with the extra costs of these new cars.

Over here, we have to be concerned with the number of $200,000+ cars which are getting into collisions and cost more than twice a family car to fix. There is a special insurance rate for them but I don't think it's high enough given the repair costs. Even if there are fewer of them compared to "normal ppl's cars", their costs are much, much higher.
