Just found out Toyota Canada has been updated their Prius page. From the page itself looks like there is ZERO change compare to 2017 MY (no 11.6-inch display for Canadian market). But according to techinfo.toyota.com there is one change to the Canadian model which is rear seat belt warning has been added. Also, price has been bump up around $300.

Yup. Looks like a carryover model (except for the change you noted. Thanks!)

Another oddity - "rear seat belt warning" is on the 2016 Australian models. In fact, I thought it was on all cars sold here.

North America is a bit behind when it comes to these things. (The rear seatbelt warning was available on the Prius since 2009 but we're just getting it in 2017/2018)

Maybe because Japan didn't require rear seat passengers to wear seatbelts until 2008, but Toyota was forward thinking?

I've always been appalled about how lax people are about seatbelts in Japan, we get "buckle up for safety" and "click it or ticket" drilled into us early on.

According to reports in the Asahi Shimbun and the Mainichi Shimbun, new passenger car models released in September 2020 and thereafter must have safety belt reminder systems to cover all seats under new transport ministry rules.

The rules will require all seats in new passenger vehicles to have seatbelt sensors that sound alarms if the vehicles are driven without passengers' seatbelts being fastened.

In a serious accident the rear passengers can become lethal projectiles, even if they don't care about their own lives. ;)

Interesting. I remember being in Hong Kong back in the 90s and seatbelts weren't required for rear passengers either. I assume that has changed??

But your links strongly explains why Toyota started including this feature.

I think it's more depends on local regulations? Yes I do remember my dad's 1989 Corolla in Hong Kong didn't have any rear seat belt while the 1983 Corolla I have in Canada do have rear seat belts.

Yeah but I'm unaware of any Canadian regulations that will require rear seatbelt notification.

Either way, it's a good feature for families.

And of course, unless you are in Quebec, you can't select a Prime on Toyota.ca. One local dealer posted pictures of the Prime on their website, but they "stole" those images from Toyota.com. They show a white or cream interior, which is not available in Canada (Quebec). Prime is black interior only in Quebec.

There are only two models/colours available with interior "not black" in the hatchback. You can get a red Technology package with beige interior, and you can get a white Touring package with beige interior. I have a friend who wants to buy one with a "not black" interior (too dark, and I agree). Rather frustrating.

Ha ha, I remember our Brit tutorial jingle. Obviously struggled with rhymes, because the came up with:-

    Clunk, click. Every trip.

It caught on, probably because most folks struggled with trying to get 'click and trip' to become rhyming.

Correction: CANADA is a bit behind. My 2017 has that feature and I suspect our 2016 ones have that too. @krmcg could verify.

Here is the 2016 manual. I do not see the rear seat belt lights.

OK. Checked it out in the driveway. There is only one seatbelt indicator light - works for either the left or right front passenger seats. There is NO rear passenger seat belt warning!

The seatbelt warning alarm used to be called Mom or Dad when I was a kid.

Yes. We don't have the N/C safety plus package.
