The transmission went out on my 2006 Prius at the end of Oct. The car has just under 252k miles on it. The car starts but is not drivable. A used transmission is $2550 and a new transmission is $5k. I'm the original owner. It has the original engine and hybrid battery. The engine burns some oil but the hybrid battery seems okay. I still get 44-48mpg. (I read that the car will take a dramatic drop in mpg when the hybrid battery is about to go.) My mechanic was going to buy it for his 16 year old daughter but finally decided this week to get her a newer car. I've called different junkyard brokers to get quotes which are around $450 including towing and taking care of DMV paperwork. I live in southern CA. A friend suggested I sell it myself to get more money via craigslist or Autotrader. I'm not sure how much to ask or if it would be worth it. I would need to sell it within 30 days or else extend the auto insurance coverage past the 30 days. Any advice on asking price? Or if it's worth trying to sell it myself? Or just let the junkyard broker take it and be done with it?
i would just sell it to the wrecker, but i have no idea of it's worth. seems like it's life has been used up. have you checked kbb to see what it would be worth if running?
Thank you Bisco! I greatly appreciate your advice. I always read your posts when I’m researching on Priuschat. I did try and look at kbb to get a “Fair” value but I could only seem to get the value for Good condition. I’m just going to sell it to the junkyard broker and not have to worry about selling it myself.
$450 seems generous to me. High mileage is the real deal breaker for this non-running. Not much reason to revive it. Scrap value basically. You could store it and part it out. But that can be a big hassle.
If this is not the only car in your household then as far as I know you shouldn't have to insure it if it is no longer being driven. You should call your insurance company immediately and ask them if you can cancel the insurance on it, otherwise you might be paying for insurance that you don't need. They should refund you for whatever time is left in the policy period. Even if it's just 30 days left in the period that's still worth a phone call. If it's the only car in the household then it gets more complicated because if you cancel even for a brief period that creates an insurance lapse which can make it harder to insure your next vehicle. But cancelling just one vehicle in your household shouldn't, but again check with your insurance company.

Thank you to everyone who posted a reply. I'm very grateful for all your help and advice!! It looks like I've sold my car. I'm really glad my faithful car will be going to a member of the PriusChat family. We will be doing the transfer in the next week or so. Happy Thanksgiving!
