well you can't see that it's downhill driving it looks mostly flat. from mousing it it looks like about 50 feet change from 255 west 14 mile road to 14 mile road and Dequindre.( about 3 miles in length) The speed limit to the light on main street ( about 1/4 mile away) is 35 MPH. I accelerated quickly up to that speed like I always do, but the traffic light was red when I approached it. And ICE had already kicked in.

maybe the accelerating quickly, although others say that doesn't do it. doesn't sound like elevation change is a problem.
    a real head scratcher.(n)

Like I said "like I always do" (when the temperature is 50 F or above) no issues with ICE kicking in

judging anyones 'speed of acceleration' is impossible. but if another member @Skylis A who parks outdoor overnight, with similar overnight temp and at time of first drive, will or has tried pushing the pedal to the floor on a fairly flat road, that might tell us something.

Well I don't push it to the floor but I do accelerate quickly. When I pick up my car tomorrow and when the weather goes below 50 F I will try going at a "crippled snail" (thanks @HPrimeAdvanced, lol) remember if I'm going around 25 MPH or slower ICE will not kick in, learned this fact from my PIP days:D

I've now had the ICE start four times unexpectedly. Temperatures were from 30F to 80F. All four times the battery was not at 100% but close (84% to 97%) and all four times I was doing a fairly substantial braking in B mode. I duplicated the route a couple of times but without B mode and those times the ICE didn't start.

So I'm wondering if the OP's problem is actually related.

My battery capacity is at full capacity when I start out. But I'm driving out of the parking lot which is about 0.2 miles till I hit 14 mile road at which I accelerate to 35 MPH.

Did you start out from leaving your car plugged in overnight? maybe unrelated but fits the "ICE comes on anyway" thread:p

If you have GPS, You can probably check elevation with that. In my crazy 60-75 degree weather, on EV, using POWER mode, and gunning it to 2/3-3/4 throttle, will not engage ICE.

Sorry, sometimes I have to make a Prius "house call."

I use Google Earth Pro, version 7.3.0.3832, August 18, 2017, and when I put my cursor over the route and hold <CNTL> and click, I get a "Show Elevation Profile" option which inserts the elevation graph. The left is the starting location and the right is the end. So change the view to orient the map to match the elevation profile and take a screen shot.

B mode would be much more prone to start the engine. We definitely need to make sure that is criteria was ask about when a new owner makes comment about a surprise start.

btw, here's more real-world data to ponder. Sub-Freezing commute with pre-condition and heater set to 65 ECO. Engine never started...

Ok, it was 36 F this morning, returned the Red Prime rental. had climate set for 65 F and ECO, ICE did not come on, will test this theory further on my car from now on. Thanks @john1701a

Whelp, the 65 F and ECO theory to prevent ICE from kicking in went out the window, to make matters worse, I picked up the car and drove it home, all EV then charged it, then drove down 14 mile road and ICE kicked in
