    Toyota is an old man brand among my friends.

    The issue for young people is that they likely have high student debt, and are facing a shrinking middle class. When they can afford it, they will buy a new car, but they might be out of the young demographic by then. Unless the automakers attempts at targeting the young include lower out of pocket costs, the money spent might be wasted.

    Since most young people getting cars buy used, focusing of improved reliability might be a better bet. A poor ownership experience will sour a person to a brand.

    Improved reliability is a double-edged sword, though - the market sometimes overcompensates for it.

    See rusted out hulks of Toyota pickups selling for serviceable Ranger money.
