Cruise Control - car keeps accelerating after releasing cruise lever

Just got a 2017 Prius 3T. Manual says that to accelerate 1 mph while on cruise control push the lever up once; to accelerate more hold the lever in the up position. We've noticed with our car that the car keeps accelerating even after releasing the lever, until we tap the brakes - which is not what the manual says should happen.

Anyone else see this? Seems potentially dangerous.

    Thanks

    welcome!

the error is in holding the stalk up. the computer is registering mph increase faster than the car.
best thing is to use the accelerator.

this has been happening since the computer genius woz first noticed it and called the cops.

the real problem is translating japanenglish in your brain.

Look at the speed the cruise control is set to, when you hold the speed lever, the speed number keeps going up, so hold it for five seconds at 30 mph and now it’s set at 45 mph
If you touch it once it goes up 1mph, but if you hold it it increases fast, the car speeds slowly until it gets to the set speed.

I would re-read the section on the radar cruise control (vehicle-to-vehicle cruise control in the manual) again.

If you look at the set speed on the 4.2" MID (it should be showing the DRCC with your car and 1, 2, or 3 bars in front. On the bottom left or bottom right, there's a speed; that's your set speed).

What you did by holding up is increase the set speed. When you let go, it's still accelerating to match your set speed. On the older Prii, holding it would increment by 5mph so people were freaking out. I guess Toyota kept it to 1mph for safety.

This operates differently from regular cruise control (constant speed cruise control in the manual) where you accelerate until you let go of the stalk.

With DRCC, you actually set it to the km/hr or MPH you want. For instance, if you join a road and are in traffic with a speed limit of 90km/hr, you wind the stalk up to 90:

    upload_2017-10-27_18-42-44.png

You could be driving at 50km/hr at the time, wind it up to 90, and it will accelerated to 90 unless a vehicle is in front driving slower, in which case it will sit in behind that car till you change lanes etc. If that car slows and you're still behind, your car will slow down even to a complete halt. To then resume when he drives off, you just touch the accelerator briefly, releasing it when your car starts moving - it will resume following the car in front.

    Works perfectly.

Yes the DRCC is a fantastic bit of kit. I use it in slow moving stop and go traffic too as it saves having to ride the brakes all the time. Why not let the car take the stress out of driving (y)

@Carolyn Belknap , before you go to the dealer, try again, but this time just tap the cruise control bar up with a quick flip. This would be more likely to succeed than a push, which could be held longer than is necessary resulting in the extra acceleration you had earlier. (y)

I think it's likely working as it should.

But, the dealer's salesperson REALLY should have given instruction (or demonstration) on it's use before delivery - so checking with your salesperson wouldn't go astray.

The 2018 Camry has two different versions of DRCC which is explicitly mentioned in the specification sheet and brochure. What are the chances the product advisors will remember the differences? (and which trim level has it?)

    How do you activate "resume"?

If you cancel cruise, and then tap up on the stalk once, is that resume? I don't use that function to speak of, but I'm thinking: won't that activate resume, try to haul you all the way back up to the previously set speed, fairly aggressively.

Apologies if this has been said already, haven't read right through the thread.

Yes, it will resume, but "aggressively" isn't the word which comes to mind - more like "leisurely". Instead of touching the stalk, I almost always touch the accelerator and when the car starts moving, leave it to resume.

Is that + button direction not also labeled "Resume" ??

The tap to accelerate works as advertised ONLY if the cruise is already "set" and functioning.
Otherwise it functions as "resume" and will accelerate to the previously used speed.

Agreed. This is one place the Driving Mode selection makes a big difference.

    Tap up to resume

It depends on the generation. Mine (3rd Gen) will accelerate aggressively. The Gen 4 is a lot smoother and less aggressive.
