    Only if it's a solvent...

I thought solvents were liquids. I know some gasses can cause damage too.

A solvent is a substance that can dissolve another substance into it. Gases generally mix, or react. Now don't get me started on efflorescence and deliquescent! ;)

A solvent is something which (broadly speaking) dissolves stuff. Water is the most common solvent, but is unlikely to damage a steering wheel.

I still go back to my assertion that a faulty wheel should be covered by warranty. Steering wheels just don't disintegrate, rather many last for decades.

Have any been reported to TOYOTA?

I went back to AutoNation Toyota in Pinellas Park, Florida. The service manager spoke to the service supervisor. As a one time courtesy, the new steering wheel has been ordered under warranty. He said that something rough was rubbed against the wheel. What, my khaki shorts?

My wife says I'm a source of large amounts of gas. However, I don't feel that is relevant in this post.

Good to hear you were able to replace under warantee.

The blister on mine continues to grow.

mine is at very early stages of the same problem. I just notice it last weekend. It's a very small blister right now, but I fear the future... Im at about 18 months and 40k miles.

Show your dealer ASAP and ensure they record it. You could provide them with photos and keep some yourself, but the earlier the better is what I'd suggest. Good luck.

My wheel be shedding its skin like a snake!

    The top most segment, anyway.

Gorilla Tape is too think to conform to the curvature of the wheel.

Electrical tape loses its grip after a while — leaving my hand black.

    Anything better?

Probably sounds naff, but when I used to cycle, I stayed my handlebars with towelling. It gives a comfortable and sure grip. My sister used it successfully for her this racquet handle back in the fifties as well.

Not exactly. Forum was messing me around and my updates got dropped, but I meant like a long 2" strip wrapped around and around like a spiral bandage and glued at the end where the the tail meets the start. If wound tightly, there will be no slippage.

Good to see some people are having luck getting this issue taken care of. My dealer originally turned me away, saying I had rubbed something against it and it was my fault. Now that I'm seeing this is not a unique issue, I'm taking my pictures and this forum thread and I'm gonna let my inner grandmother out.

I had the same problem. Just some wrinkle and bubbling without scratch. Toyota Canada would not accept warranty claim and blame it on finger nail scratch. I am going to take a high def picture with my SLR camera. Not sure if it will go anywhere.

Mine started peeling off in a year; bought the car in April 2016. I called the salesperson at 101 Toyota, he told me it is not covered under warranty. I left a message to the finance manager who sold me the upgrade leather package. Hopefully he can give me some information. I do not know what kind of leather or fabric it is; it has to be cardboard paper. I have a 2006 Solara and the leather does not even have a scratch!

Toyota uses Softex, not leather in US Prius. The UK, for instance, can get real leather.

Welcome to Prius Chat Suzanne. I'm not in USA but if tell the dealer to give you his response in writing and then escalate the complaint to Toyota USA and ask them to investigate further.
