Is the Prime larger?

I moved up from an 09. The new one is definitely wider. I have a tight space in a condo garage, and am having a hard time making that 90 degree turn. It was no problem with my gen 3.

 

i think each gen has gotten a tiny bit bigger.

 

Here are my space estimates.
We know Gen3 was +3-ft3 over Gen2, because Toyota gave us many technical details about the Gen2 to 3 updates.
Unfort there was much less detail from Toyota on Gen4 vs. Gen3 changes. I think the sedan-like appearance of Gen4 takes quite a bit of cargo space out and adds some passenger space.

 

looks like gen 4 does have more room, but it's almost impossible to measure drivers space.

 

It looks like Toyota made the new Gen4/TNGA frame to give almost exactly same internal volume as Gen3, when compared on the same basis with spare tire and counting Gen3's underfloor (117.7 vs 118.3-ft3). I do think there is a little more PAX space in Gen4.

 

Coming straight out of 7 years in my 2010, I feel exactly the same way. I have more arm room. It may be due to seat placement, or something else, but this car feels as roomy in the front as our Camry. My wife said the same thing the first time she sat in it. I know the outside is slightly longer and wider but not a lot.

 

when you talk about perceived drivers seat space, the volume measurements of the car are worthless. even a change in seat track length, or center console design can create an effect without changing volume.

 

I agree 100%. All I know is, I fit in this vehicle naturally, with no cramped feeling at all. My 2010 was just a little tighter feeling. Like my arm position next to the window fits better, etc. If I want to put it on the armrest, it's also in a natural position. Not having the massive center column helps a lot with knee placement options, but that was not what I noticed first. It was the side to side extra space between the seat and door that hit me right off.

 

i wonder what the door to door measurements are on the 3 different gens.

 

I can measure my new one, but my 2010 is gone. I know my left arm had 7 years of practice gong to a certain spot on top of the door sill and this one is farther away.

 

my gen 3 measure 55 1/4" from door to door, where the door sits the jamb by my shoulder. the trim bumps in and out, so i found the widest part, only a half inch difference though.
the door to console edge measures 26" at the rear of the console lid.

 

I've got the same. Door glass to glass in that area and just above the door open latch is 61".

 

i'll measure that.

Since that's where my arm goes, that may be the extra 1" I'm feeling.

 

1/2" on one side, but very possible. the shelf is too narrow to rest my arm comfortably with the window closed. also, the door interior can be carved to make it feel roomier, and the placement of the center console.
