Revisiting? Or maybe just securing patents for what they already brought up to a working model? Just wondering - i never found any patents from their earlier work. It'd be crazy - but what if another company came along .... submitted slightly similar patent requests, just to forestall Tesla growth, if they did want to head down that path again. The article suggests the projects were shelved due to the lack of surplus packs. Duno ... but with the gigafactory production continually picking up the pace ... with eventual capacity to be able to spit out a million individual cells/day (from Nevada, the EU & China) - who knows. When the swap station was up & running - owners simply didn't mind the 30-ish minute wait that most would average, on just the regular ol' fashion charge system. If that still holds true, then a new setup would seemingly be self defeating.

i was thinking the same, but then, why wait so long? they should have patented it when they designed it.

Well for ONE thing - back when tesla brought the tech up on line - there were NO other EV's even designed to have batteries quickly/easily removed - much less any long range EV's. Maybe Tesla got wind of someone else thinking of doing the same thing . . . like VW. They seems to be the only other company talking of going whole hog into EV's with infrastructure & such. Could be part of the vw tech may be swaps. Who knows.

Sounds like they engineered the Model 3 not very swappable friendly though.

Well if enough PriusChat members had their way Tesla would cease to be a company a long time ago. How dare they push the envelope and challenge the status quo.

We have that kind of influence?
If that were true, Toyota US would not be discontinuing the Prius v. Some people are being told that by their dealers.

Well from the quote - it looks like the model 3 may still work, it just wouldn't be as Uber fast.

This is unfair as diversity in the market place lets the buyer choose. Now if we could just get a sustainer engine-generator in a Tesla that can hold 75 mph ...

I love diversity in the marketplace. I don't think some of your fellow PriusChatters agree that Tesla should exist. A lot seem to think that BEV's are pretty useless.

That is exactly how I framed it Saturday:
    • Plug-in Hybrid - for those who want a car that can handle both cheap, city driving yet still go cross-country.
    • BEV - for those who also keep a purpose built, gas/diesel car for long distance or special loads like a pickup.
    Pick your poison.

Uh Oh! Double posting suggests and expected database error is about to occur.
