Qi Wireless Charging

I gave up on the Qi, much too slow. I use a 12V wired fast charger. I've been looking into the magnetic plugs. They look pretty cool and would be faster with no hunting around for the connector.

 

As it states in the manual the wireless charging pad generates only 5 watts ( about 400 MA) that's less than a half of an amp. A fast charger is about 2 amps.

 

Phones use between 3.7 and 4.3V to charge. USB charging provides 5V. 5W and 5V is 1A, not 400mA.

The Panasonic statement of conformity says it's limited to 13.2W or 1A.

 

oops sorry I used the ohms law calculator and inputted 12 volts not 5 volts

 

I was excited about the Qi charger and bought a case. It seemed that my cell reception got much worse (but not sure if there is really any correlation) and the case didn't rise above the face of the phone so the face wasn't protected. I just use the USB charger thought the 12v (lighter) kept from my old 2005 Prius. The direct connection doesn't charge and just keeps vibrating

 

Sorry to bump this old thread but I have a new phone coming soon that's really tall - Galaxy S8+. Was wondering if anyone had exact dimensions of the qi charging area? I'll be sad if my new phone doesn't fit. It's 159.5mm or 6.28" tall. It's a tiny bit taller than the iPhone 7 plus (6.23" tall) but narrower. I know iPhone doesn't have qi but if someone has out there 7 plus there and it fit with a tiny bit more room then this should fit.

 

Should fit. I have a picture of my phone in it, and my phone is 145mm long. There's at least 15mm of clearance on each end, estimating by eye on the picture.

 

I have the Galaxy S7 phone. It charges just fine with the cover in place. The only problem I have with it is if I drive the car with a little bit too much enthusiasm around corners, the phone tends to slide around. This results in the phone not charging when it is out of position. Hence I think that this Qi "dock" should have enough room for
your phone. I can try to measure the space if you want, but don't know if I would trust that; it's a bit difficult to access/see the space for this old man!

The Qi charger has a moving coil, so that if the phone slides, while still lying flat on a part of the black surface, the coil will reposition itself to make sure charging is not interrupted (for small movements) or is re-established in case of bigger movements.

 

I've got a Samsung Note 5, with built in wireless charging, in a relatively thin case. The phone charges fine, but slowly, on one of those $5 ebay wireless chargers. In my Prime, it seems like the Qi charger can only maintain the phone's charge if I have an app like waze running, even with the screen off. It will charge slowly if I don't have any apps running.
If I have a low battery, waze running and charging wirelessly, the phone it gets really hot.

I don't see the Qi charger as being a replacement for a wired USB charger for when you need to charge and have waze open.

 

Waze uses the GPS and the wifi. Those will go through the battery rather quickly I can see why the wireless charger can't keep up compared to the wired USB cable.

Also, for everyone trying to use the Qi charger with maps or Waze, you really would be better served if you just got a fast charger 12V to USB adapter. The Qi charger may be able to charge the phone if you have it off, but if you run ANY meaningful app, the 'outflow' will beat the 'inflow' every time, by a large margin and you will have less charge than when you started. On long trips, I plug in and let my wife use the Qi charger while her phone is off (dark).

Here's one on Amazon for around $16.

But that's just one of many. You could get 2, and use the 12V port behind the center console for the back seat passengers.

 

I see the Qi being kind of a waste for my own personal needs. I almost always have the car plugged in via USB most due to liking the sound and functions available better than via Bluetooth. I guess I don't see why anyone would prefer wireless charging except for the obvious lack of a cord.

 

It would make sense if Toyota made it a true Q1 quick charger

1. The Owner’s Manual (on page 536) identifies the wireless charger in the Prius Prime as a Panasonic model CA-QS05H3AJ.
2. The Wireless Power Consortium’s Qi Certified Product Database listing for the Panasonic CA-QS05 says it uses transmitter design A7.
3. The Qi Wireless Power Transfer System Power Class 0 Specification (PDF) (Version 1.2.2, April 2016) says, in Part 4, Section 2.2.7, that transmitter design A7 “enables Free Positioning” and has a positioning stage with a resolution of 0.1 mm or better in each axis.

 

I guess if you just want to set your phone down and use Bluetooth to take a call, it'll keep your battery from draining.

 

Qi charging is way too slow use a fast car charger from Samsung or check out Amazon.

Yes, wireless charging is not that strong yet, but it will evolve over time. But it’s very important that phones are switching over now which will promote further advancements. It’s hard to believe, but mark my words: in 15-25 years, long-range wireless charging will be everywhere (your home, stores, etc.) and wireless devices will just “charge” when you’re in the building. Future generations will look back and chuckle at the idea that people used to have to plug devices in to charge.
