So I have another gas gauge question. I understand the part about it not being terribly accurate, I also get the part about needing 3 gallons for it to reset and "notice" you added gas. My question comes with, I back my car into my driveway. My drive is sloped down to the street so nose down. I don't know how much, but a car in neutral would roll at a pretty good clip. When I park I set the parking brake and the rear hunches down when I shut it off and let my foot off the brake. I would think the angle would be enough to slosh the gas forward making the car think it is down some, but when leveled out would not equal 3 gallons. Could I really have more gas in the car then it is registering? Thanks
I stopped on the way to work to put gas in today. I had three pips left. I put in 6.32 gallons. So does that mean I really had almost 1/2 tank left?
here's the problem, you don't know what three pips mean, so you don't know how much gas is in the tank after you filled it. something more than 6.32 to be sure. maybe try driving to the blinking pip, and see how much she takes.
if the bladder is working properly, i think it would represent 1.2 gallons or so. and for many that is the case. i never had an issue with my '04 and '08. but for those whose bladders act up, for whatever reason, odd things can happen, like driving a hundred miles on the first pip, or suddenly having 2 or 3 pips disappear. or not being able to put much gas in the car. you have to do your own testing. watch the odometer and see how many miles between each pip. and winter can be different from summer as well.
gen 3 (starts 2010 in the u.s.) has no bladder, and outside n/a, there never was one. much less problems.
The :"guess" gauge is not linear. The first PiP can respresent up to 150 miles, after that the PiP's go away between every 20-30 miles or so. Seems to me the software works in a way that does not respond to sloshing around. Once you lose a bar you don't get that back until refill.
I drive 31 miles each way for work. After the first I lose 1 a day, maybe two. The computer says I average 50.x I know it never comes back from sloshing and wondered if it was due to not sloshing 3 gallons back to reset it.
the 3 gallon rule is only for when the tank has been run dry. and even that isn't perfect as my '08 started right up after 2 gallons.
Fill the gas tank (bladder) drive around while or till three bars (pipes) are fine and fill up. Divide by three and estimate. Or divide gallons by actual miles and each bar represents that much on average. No real science unless the car is on a roller with consistent air and temp. SM-G935P ?
