Lithium battery charge level for optimum longevity

    The only smarter than the Prius thing I can do is get better mpg than the cruise control on undulating roads. It tends to want to thrash up hills to keep the speed up and regen brake downhill to keep the speed down, wasting fuel in the process. Today on a 60 mile round trip, the cruise scored 75/100 on the meter and was doing 56 mpg and when I took over and turned cruise off the score went up to 89/100 and the mpg went up to 71. :p

    The answer you are looking for is 50% SoC ± 10%. Keep it there and you get optimal battery life. That's the recommendation you will find on most technologies with lithium batteries and storage.

    Keep in mind, your car consists of more than just a battery. Preserving a single component in your vehicle while sacrificing other components or ignoring their lifespans or value may be counter productive. For example, We're seeing 20% degradation thus far in BEV's. On my own 120k mile Plug in Prius with my always fully charged ready to go and over 2000 charge cycles shows a 15% degradation) What do you think your car is worth on top of a Prius Prime with 20% degradation after 10 years when you sell yours and it has say only 10% degradation? I think it will be worth about as much as a gently used iPhone 4s versus any iPhone 4s.

    wow, it would be difficult to leave my laptop between 45 and 55% charged, but i don't really store it, except when i'm sleeping, about 12 hours everyday.

    The best is to keep battery same as they are delivered around 30-40% charge...for extended time storage....that is how 2 Primes are delivered to me from Factory....

    I still figuring out car charge mode and how far is charging ....
    I will be using some special tool to measure current on various positions to measure also and once I'm confident with my findings will post my measurements

    You should link the article that this chart comes from.
    Battery Capacity Loss Warranty Chart For 2016 30 kWh Nissan LEAF
    It is an assumed minimum warranty chart. There three key items you need to keep in mind when reading.

    1. This is an extrapolation from the 24 kWh battery to the 30 kWh battery.
    2. The author assumes 66.25% capacity = 4th bar loss, this was true on a 2011 Leaf and assumed to be same on a 30 kWh 2016 Leaf.
    3. A polynomial curve is used to estimate rate of degradation. It certainly looks plausible. I'd like to see how he derived it.

    What's interesting to me is I came to opposite conclusions from the author.
    I don't think the chart is predicting anything. It's showing lower limits of degradation before warranty is provided. Which means you were on your way to a warranty replacement if after 3 years, you were below 86.68% on 24 kWh batteries. Now you need to go below 80.95% capacity on 30 kWh for the same time period and mileage. That's a bad thing. The good news is the warranty has been extended.

    WRT cell phones, don't run the batteries flat, don't use them while charging, and use the chargers that came with the device. Those are the 3 major causes of battery issues we get at the job. Dropping the device doesn't make it work better, either.

    Basically, “I would recommend charging to 70% normally. When you need a long trip, charge to 100%.”

    Interesting. Would that mean that the Tesla SoC indicate the entire range from 0% - 100% instead of the range that the Prius indicates? And more importantly does that mean that the owner/operator is responsible for insuring that the battery is in the correct charge range, when left plugged in and charging?

    BEV practices don't apply to PHEVs. A BEV can drain their battery down farther than the PHEV, and PHEVs have these limits programmed in.

    My understanding is that the default charge limit for a Tesla is 70% to 80%. Most BEVs have such limits. Tesla just allows the user the option of fully charging when a long trip is planned. Along with the warnings about over using fast DC charging, there are warnings about charging to full too often.

    I wonder if they have an app that allows a variety to the max charge setting. I think the leaf has something like that.
