Prime charging rates at home

Full charge from empty EV range is 6.5-6.8 kWh. x .1311kwh would be $0.85-0.89/charge. If you use climate prep with charge cord plugged in, with my experience, there is addtional 0.5-1.0 kWh electricity used depending on temp setting.

 

and there is also a loss from the outlet to the car. typically 15%, from what i've read.

 

It's a remote AC function that comes with all trims of PRIMES. In advanced you can use smartphone app to trun on AC to set temp, but mine is premium trim so I have to use key fob to turn it on. If the car is plugged in, it will not deplete traction battery's charge, but use additional electricity from the wall power.

 

That's what I have read somewhere, but using Kill A Watt meter to measure actual kWh used to fully charge from 0 EV, I have been seeing 6.4-6.8kWh/charge. If 15% loss is included in this number, then actual charge used would be 5.44-5.78kWh, which seems too low for 8.8kWh capacity battery.

 

interesting. i suppose there is some loss after the power flows through the electric meter to the house, circuit breaker, and finally to the outlet for the evse, but my knowledge is limited.

 

If it's like the original PiP, there is almost a 40% reserve when you add up buffers on each side. This would equate exactly with the numbers you are seeing.

 

I've read those thread stating PiP has usable EV charge from 85%-23% on SOC. I can understand that EV is kicked out at 23% SOC, but what I don't understand on this statement is what happens to top 15% of SOC? I think many of the thread I’ve read says you can only charge the traction battery up to 85%, but is that true? You never get fully charged battery? If same number applies to PRIME, then out of 8.8kWh battery only 7.48kWh to 2.024kWh is usable for EV. That’s 5.456kWh of usable for EV.

 

yes, it's not good to fully charge or discharge lion batteries, so toyota buffers both ends. some mpg's allow user to over ride the high end, but it will shorten battery life if done too often.
as for usable kWh's, what really matters is how many ev miles you get, and most people are quite pleased.

it uses a tiny amount of electricity inside the circuit board, like many devices around the home that are plugged in all the time.
the timer is so that you can have it charged just before you leave. that way, it doesn't stay fully charged for hours on end, day after day.

 

that's fine. the timer is just for those who go to bed early.

Depends.

With 240 v L2 charging as I have, full charge is between 5.9 and 6.1kwh. This is as reported by my smart charger.

240v L2 has less charging loss it would seem.
