Sadly we know a bunch of people in the Tampa area who, per a phone call yesterday, are choosing to ride out the storm. Wanted to be with their family who was staying. Was on my mind as I posted the 'what technology would you want' query. I'd want the v as the best balance of ability to take memory items + safety items and sit in traffic jams without exhausting the supply of gas idling based on the traffic shots I've seen.

And yes, I'd have left days ago.

If I were evacuating a hurricane, I'd want a motorcycle, because lane splitting.

Interesting Tesla upgraded all of the Florida cars that were range limited but had more capable batteries to allow 30 miles more range. Nice move.

As long as the EV is a Tesla....an EV all day. Not even close IMO. Reports were that Superchargers were not overcrowded and were working perfectly. Meanwhile, many gas stations were running out of gas. And then there are the people with ICE's that sit in traffic for hundreds and hundreds of miles and run out of gas a quarter of the way into the trip. This was happening, not even a theoretical.

EV, then Plug In Hybrid, then Hybrid, then ICE.

link? btw, afaik, only the 60kWh packs are upgradeable, & what would be the point. power is out for over 1Mil people now, & growing. No juice .... which also means no gas.
EDIT
Nevermind I found it. Only, what good would it do unless you could turn all cars into helicopters. No one's going anywhere - gad ir otherwise
Kniw what might be a good idea? instead of derailing the 310 mile range thread?
post all of that in the proper sub-forum - instead of cluttering this with, 'well what if this happened - & what if that might happen' . . . Just a thought. Maybe the op doesn't mind.

Everyone on this thread salutes Tesla's newest evolution for it's proposed cost reduction and range extension in the Model 3. While no discussion about EVs can be devoid of "what if" comparisons to Gas, Diesel and Hybrid vehicles...using major disasters that effect ALL transportation as a "what if" argument for either side is like pissing in the wind...pun intended.

Having just been stuck in the eclipse traffic jam, where I averaged 16mph for 8 hours of my 10 hour drive, you got that wrong. In my Prius Prime, I averaged 74.5mpg for that jam, meaning I had a range of over 850 miles. The last thing I wanted to be doing was sitting in my car for an extra hour or two charging when it was already after midnight and I had already been driving for many hours. And I didn't even come close to having to fill up because of that incredible mileage. And I would have had to charge somewhere, because my route that day was 443 miles, 344 of which were between charging stations.

except with a tesla you would only be set back at most 40 minutes. Many people took the journey in their Telsa.

In my case, I was doing a tank capacity test of our BMW i3-REx so I was down about half a tank where I viewed the eclipse. On the trip back, I took the same state road home but entered it away from the grid-locked, Spring City. The car ran out of gas about 15 miles from the town I filled up on the way up so I knew the gas stations. Actually it was first a biology break and then the gas. All three tanks ran ~2.3 gallons (~92 miles each) ... mission accomplished.

When I got close to the Alabama state line, I stopped at a Cracker Barrel (you can get more but you can't take longer) and sure enough they had a CHAdeMO which I can't use and L2-J1772. An hour later, I was fed and the car had added ~20 miles, 20% SOC (for $2.74) and I was on the road again. The BMW i3-REx uses premium costing ~$2.60/gal so it was getting about 20 MPGe.

So let's talk L2-J1772 charging rates and costs. Typically in the South you are paying a parking fee when plugged in and the current is limited by either the built-in vehicle charger or circuit of the L2-J1772. In typical configurations, the J1772 is powered by a 50A, 210VAC, commercial circuit since this corresponds to the NEMA 14-50 plug and limited to 80% of 50A or a usable 40A. The BMW i3-REx is built-in limited to 31A. If a Tesla showed up it could have gotten ~25 miles for the same $2.74. Note this is back-of-the-envelope because the Tesla Model 3 should have similar efficiency to our BMW i3-REx with at least a 40A capability ... probably limited to 40A by the Cracker Barrel L2 circuit.

ps. How do you like that loop back to the Tesla?

Everything I said was 100% true. If you don't believe that, than state your case instead of making unsupported statements.

don't let people's trolling get to you ... if hand-wringing is their game .... & they're bound & determined to derail the Ops thread, simply remind them that low-speed driving benefits BOTH ice & ev's;
2017-03-04-09-45-46.png
then smile - and wait for the next round off negativity ... smile, & repeat.
If the model S can get that kind of 'extra' range when normally it would be doing 'only' over 300 miles, you can imagine the same "500+ miles* true for the model 3.
See? brought the OP right back on "long range" topic.

Well said...we just need to drown out the negativity with positive posts.

Anyone see the announcement this morning of installing more chargers in city centers?

So, no answer, exactly as expected. You accused me of telling half-truths, but when confronted, you ran away, probably because you know you were wrong.

Leave troll. You aren't wanted here. I'm secure enough in my position to not feel the need to argue every little point. Good day.

Ugg. Let me state plainly my case.

I think it is the worst in people that use a natural disaster to score political points, especially when most of the statements are on the face of it misleading. That is why I wrote the other comment.

Don't pretend you are keeping it 100. Keeping it 100, would mean you wouldn't ad FUD to this, but since that is your claim, lets see.

You are claiming your indicated mpg in an eclipse traffic jam would be the same in totally different weather conditions for a much longer drive, and you would not need a bathroom break. Why put up such rediculous assumptions if you were keeping it 100.

Then you claim rather than wait in a 2 hour gas line, you couldn't wait to charge a tesla, where all indications are there were no lines. And you are pretending your trip in a low population area of the country is equivallent to a place with heavy traffic. Look at the map.
Find Us | Tesla Canada

I think the OP responded already that he badly stated his case. Did you know that you can actually rent cars? I even coordinated some rentals/trips out so people could drive elderly out of the gulf coast of florida saturday morning for some folks I used to work with, that had relatives that needed help. Their cars were too small to take the people and pets, and the old company I worked with them at, this morning said they would pay me back. people help people. Let's not make this against your gripe about something you will never buy. Don't tell us you are being 100, and someone that buys a model 3 can't get out of a huricane. In many cases its a better car.

Yep, very cool. Should be very helpful for people without access to charging at home.
Even though the article mentioned starting in Boston and Chicago, it appears three more superchargers are planned for the Minneapolis area as well.

What does "keeping it 100" mean?

Where did I make either claim? We did stop for a bathroom break, but not anywhere near a place you could possibly charge. And we only stopped for 15 minutes.

I made no such claim, and I did not wait in any gas line because I didn't need to fill up that entire day. That's the nice thing about having a 600+ mile range.

I've done it. Renting a car for a long trip is an incredible hassle. That's why I've only ever done it once.
