Cleaned HV fan, got Check hybrid System notification

    2011 prius, less than 100 miles on it.

    Yesterday cleaned HV batterry fan. Was not very dirty, although it needed some cleaning. First I cleaned it with compressed air and while doing so got some smell,like electric wire burning while air induced fan to rotate.stopped immediately and went on cleaning it manually with moisted tissue. Did not touch the board,had no contact with water.

    After reassembly started the car and everything was fine,no lights or notifications. Later on, while driving home got yellow triangle and check hybrid system light in about 10 miles. Stopped check everything for hot surfaces or odd smell.everything was ok. Disconnected the 12 v battery.waited for car to reset but the light was still on.drove in auch manne 30 more miles,les than 30 mph speed. Replaced fan and 12v battery,lights still on.

    Checked the connections,they are as intended. Could not check code on techstream as everythong was happening yesterday night.

    Any ideas what it may be? Anyone had sinikar problems?

    I dont think it is inverter as HV battery was charging while driving,although no arrows appeared on the screen.
    I Checked coolant level and inverter pump. Level was ok and coolant was circulating as well.

    P.s. I did not disconnect 12v battery while taiing tha fan off and on.may that have caused any of that?

    Unless you have pets that shed hair and ride in the car with you, there's probably no need to clean the HV fan. There won't be enough dust buildup to prevent it from cooling.

    Are you sure everything is connected back together? If the triangle is ON, there are codes that will point to a specific failure.

    I think some one here on this forum said one must hold the fan and not let it rotate when blasting air. If you connect a 5v led to a PC fan and blast it with air, the led wil light up when the fans rotates at very high rpm

    The fan was dirty, really dirty. No I do not keep pets, but it was dirty with very little particles and they were glued to the fins, so had to clean it with earsticks and alcohol, I regret I did not take photos. all plugs (2 of them) are connected.Unfortunately, I cannot read codes for now.

    Concerning cleaning it with air, as I said I did scent specific smell and stopped cleaning immediately, but if it is fan failure than changing would have solved the problem, which did not happen, or is there any chance it contributed to breaking something else in the system? And if it is fan than why system code did not appear right after start? As I said I drove about 10 miles after it apperead. I remember going over curb just before the light came on. Can there be any other issue, like loose plug or something in such case? I understand that without a code it seems like gambling, but I have left car at home after failure (it was 2 a.m.) and took my wife's car and went back to job trip, where I will stay for couple of days and would like have bullet points of the probable causes before I start investigating issue.

    BTW, is there any fuse for hybrid system and if yes where and how to check it?

    Yeah, I know I have codes,but still are there any suggestions what it may be? Pump? Fans? Hv battery (although they were charging/discharging) or anything else? One more question.if the dtc still stayed after disconnection of the battery is there any chance it needs reseting from techstream and there is nothing wrong?

    Considering battery charging,does it mean I will possibly not have problem with dc inverter?

    I'm suspecting you spun the fan too fast with the compressed air, toasted it. This is a little devious, but would you still be within the warranty for hybrid components? If so: take it in, and keep schtum about the cleaning you did, see what they say. They may replace the fan, under warranty.

    I am not under warranty, because... reasons :) Anyway, I replaced the fan already and disconnected the 12v and HV battery afterwards for at least 5 minutes but the check light is still there. As I said if the fan is dead then why the check light did not pop up right after I reinstalled it? as I mentioned I drove about 10 miles before the light came up

    what are the DTC? connect your techstream and pull the codes from your system, it should let you know what the codes are.

    do not have DTC updates so far, I will write down when I connect car to techstream, so far just contemplating what the heck it may be :(

    update: I checked the Vin and hybrid inverter recall has already been done on my car in 2015, if anyone was suspecting it could be inverter firmware malfunction.
    So far I still have no access to DTC-s and will update info ASAP

    Can't know for sure without the codes, so guessing won't help...

    The big orange plug at HY battery is fuse of sort, Make sure it's locked in properly! 2 step process. Plug in and slide clip till clicks

    Disconnect the 12v for a minute to clear the code. If it stays off, great. If there's still a fault in the car, the code will return

    Just read the dtc, it said battery cooling fan circuit low.Although, I changed the fan 2 days ago I forgot to check the fuse under the hood,so I checked it now and it was fried. Changed it and voila ,fault disappeared. I think I did a good job that I drove slowly after fault came up and did not overheat the batteries and I did really bad job that tried to clean the fan with compressed air and apparently fried the circuit up :(

    Once again,if you INTEND TO CLEAN THE FAN, DO NOT USE COMPRESSED AIR TO ROTATE THE FINS OR YOU WILL FRY UP THE CIRCUIT BOARD!

    did you removed the fan before cleaning it?

    Also, you should've checked the DTC before doing all of the replacing... it helps pin point the issue instead of replacing unnecessary parts.

    But good job on fixing the issue (y)
