So this is a quick photo showing my short work commute end trip screens. I merged these two photos together to show my morning MPG and my overall MPG....at least that's what I "think" I'm looking at?

I drive this 2016 Prius 2 very, very conservatively. Every time I look at the MPG at the end of a drive it's in the high 60's or low 70's. I'm in MN, so my mileage does take a hit in the winter, but in the winter months I was seeing high 50's for MPG.

So my issue is, 53.2 MPG seems off for the overall MPG for this car. I feel like it should be closer to 60MPG overall. Or am I missing something?

I think the overall mileage (6000+ miles) MPG is only showing the last 100hrs worth of drive, after which the hour counter resets, and I believe the overall MPG is recalculated too. Or it is a moving average.
Fact is that after 20.000km I have an overall average of 4.5L/100km and in fact I have an average at the pump that is more like 5L/100km and is way higher than the MFD optimistic 5% it adds to MPGs...

makes sense with the weather pattern. check the next fill up, maybe the lifetime trip gauge is reporting incorrectly.

I'm not sure what a lifetime MPG average is good for. I keep my display on Trip A, and reset at each fill-up. That way I can see the MPG average for the latest tank. I also track historical fuel purchased and miles driven in a spreadsheet so I can view seasonal averages.

You only have 6000+ miles on the vehicle as a whole.
I don't know....I'd be happy with an overall average of 53 mpg.
I think the combined mileage as advertised is 52 mpg.

I never paid too much attention to what mileage I was getting on a trip to trip, or even daily basis. Just served to make me over confident...if I saw a great number or unnecessarily stressed if I saw a number I felt was too low.

Why do you think you "deserve" 60 mpg? That's not even what the vehicles is promoted as providing, even if it is singularly possible.

Have you kept a complete fuel log for the life of the car? If so, we can dig through it to see of the lifetime average is inconsistent with the individual tank averages.

I would be satisfied with these numbers.

i think he's just questioning why his lifetime only shows 53, when most of his trips are 66.

    Hidden under my nose ...
Last year, none of his tanks were that high, not even close.

This year, no data. The absence of the January-April refills, when mpg is normally at its worst, really hurts any review of the lifetime display.

    This is correct.

I don't feel like I'm owed anything, it's just a bit of a head scratcher. I'm seeing consistent trips with near (or over) 70mpg and my overall average sits in the low 50's.

maybe it's not the overall average, as pakitt says in post #3.

I (think?) this one is easy. If you do a lot of relatively short trips with high MPGs, you can still drag the lifetime average down with a longer trip that has lower MPGs. One 1000 mile trip at 50 MPGs would take an awful lot of 10 mile trips at 70 MPGs to get back up to 60 MPG lifetime

Can't you just go to the fuel economy diary screen? It shows a readout of how many miles you've driven by month, and the MPGs for that month. Should be pretty easy to figure out if that lines up correctly with the lifetime odometer and MPG reading

Averages are not intuitive. Once you are below 100 percent you can never get back there. Averages go down easier than they come up (much like a Taco Bell burrito).

Can't say I've tried a Taco Bell, but are you sure about that?
