Probably because US has only one official language. In multilingual countries, a universal symbol works better (and saves on cost.. though most of the time, it's English but I think that's the reason why they're moving away from English words and using symbols).

You can find the symbols in the owner's manual since it'll list both Canadian and US wiper stalks and headlight stalks.

You see a lot of Spanish here. It is taught in schools as an elective too.
I believe French is a required course for English speakers in Canada.

I think my Sonic uses BRAKE and the speedo w/ arrow symbol. Haven't used cruise in awhile.

I think grade 8 French is required but starting from grade 9, you can take Spanish if you want or continue with French (and grade 11/12 you can branch off to Mandarin or Japanese depending on whether the school has the available teacher).

    Then there's French Immersion.....

    Mix and match!

Talking about Honda introducing Civic Diesel in EU, I still have no idea where Honda is heading to with their hybrid and EV. Subaru recently announced to pull the plug on diesel. Subaru to quit diesel by FY20 - The Japan News

Sounds like Subaru really wasn't selling enough diesels as is.

Honda currently has three hybrid systems; a DCT one along the lines of Hyundai's, a power one based on that with rear motors for AWD, and the dual motor system in the Accord. A HR-V with the dual motor is going to be coming to market, but that might not include the US. Our low gas prices had Honda take it slow in regards to hybrids for here.

They are still hydrogen FCEV supporters. The Clarity BEV is lease only in a couple of states. The PHEV version is suppose to be nationwide. Hopefully, it will be successful enough to help shift Honda's views on plug ins.

KW is easier, but the numbers are smaller. I mean would toyota rather say the prius has 121 hp or 90 KW. That 90 seems too small ;-) I find myself multiplying by 4/3 to say how many hp a device has.

Once a symbol set is standardized, it's much easier to "read" them at a glance, instead of using words. I'd prefer the symbols on the controls/screens. I'm used to it from Android, everything's been pretty much the same from KitKat on.
