    total car diagnostics
    The guy puts out quality products
    vs
    buying "cheaper" versions on EBAY.
    Fella put some time in his version. I wasn't disappointed.

    Ok ordered this elm 327.
    Dealer still didnt update me.im planing to contact them tomorow.
    There is no way in the world i will let them put all back together with old parts. I made a list of all those parts you mentioned ( great help ) and they will replace them free unless its really a small amount of $100 worth.or else i will raise my voice over there. They already got $2000 from toyota just for the stripping job. They should not charge me for anything but im willing to pay for the manifolds and other cleaning of egr etc.....
    Im in vegas now for work and i still drive their loaner .i dont have to pay for it , its a small scion iA whoch is a mazda 2 sedan.....
    .tomorow i will ask them to go over there and take some photos of stripped engine.

    I have had my elm327 wifi wireless one for 5+ years and works great. I used it when I picked up the 2011 prius. I like how small it is and can leave it plugged in while driving with my phone on the dash giving me live feedback. The software is where the magic is. I use dash command and have not tried torque but have heard good things about it. I just use it to pull/erase codes. Phone is still hooked up the to the obd2 and I also have internet at my fingertips. There are many companies that have obd2/canbus readers and software is the only difference.
    When i bought my elm327, I bought the wifi version because iphone is funny with 3rd party bluetooth. They may have fixed this now, I have not bought one in years. Android works with both wifi and bluetooth.

    Same here although I use Engine Link .offers quite a ton of PIDS for Prius. I was really impressed. I'm using IOS. I recently purchased an android too and was looking at Torque or Dash Command, haven't decided. Lots of colors (eye candy) seems would hinder functionality?

    Same here. @usbseawolf2000 has full PIDs for Gen 3 here. They can be imported to Enginelink. I think there is info somewhere in that long thread about how to do that.

    Well i just had an idea. Since its a bluetooth device i will take a used phone that im not using and permanently display all engine data by attacing it to the dash.
    Im at the dealership right now with a list of demands i made thanks to your recomendations. waiting for service manager.

    Yeah, I kind of wish I'd hung onto my old Android phone for that purpose. But it would be really old now, as in Gingerbread old. :eek:

    Looked at list...engine link picks up so many more PIDs from the ELM327....great lil tool if you gave IOS.
    They all are great I've heard. I plan on trying app for android if only just to see operational differences...

    Been there today. Only tomorow they will finish strippng the head. Talked to the manager .he said he dont believe i have an issue with cylenders or rods. I guess i have a month or two now to prove my car consumes oil. What a hassle.instead them do their work and get me a new engine. Im a bit optimistic warranty will cover it. Showed him dan's summery of items .he was looking at me like yes i know you not that idiot. I know you will get back at us if we dont honor the warranty.

    Warranty would give you a new motor for a thrown rod/broken block. Other than physical damage to the motor, they will fix the car until your warranty is up for the least amount of labor and material cost. Your manual states that the car will consume oil, they will do an oil consumption test and most likely not give you another motor. I know my comprehensive insurance will cover fire, hydrolock, water damage etc for everything based on nada value of vehicle. If toyota finds any signs of abuse/neglect, they can or will revoke your warranty.

    Here is a temporary update.
    Toyota acknoledge is responsibility. They said they will replace head gasket and anything else needed.
    Well i gave them the list and told the manager not to close the head before they perform all that. I specifically said that im willing to pay for egr cleaning or manifolds maintenance needed.
    Well to my surprise and my frustration they put it all back together and just replaced the head gasket.
    Told them why didnt they call me before that. Told them my notes to service manager saying replace gasket bolts regardless if good or bad dont use the old ones.
    They kept saying on the phone come and take your car. All is done nothing needed to be replaced. Car is ready.
    Lets see tomorow friday .
    Thats becoming an unexpected issue now

    Congrats on getting financial help from Toyota!

    As far as the EGR cooler goes,. I'd get an estimate for the cleaning. It may be cheaper to buy a new cooler as the cleaning is labor intensive.

    Make sure you can get a good look at it before they reinstall. You should be able to see through it. There's a picture of a clean cooler in my gallery.

    I have a spare that's cleaned out and ready for the next swap. It took me about a week of daily chemical soaks.

    There's no reason to believe that they didn't replace the head gasket properly following Toyota procedures. The procedures would say what items are reusable or not reusable, so I wouldn't worry about the details like the bolts they replaced or didn't replace.

    The EGR system and intake manifold clogging is not something that I think Toyota has acknowledged as being a problem. If they were clogged enough to throw a code, they would be replacing them, rather than cleaning them, because the time to clean them would not be cost effective for the dealer. On the other hand, for do-it-yourselfers, it is usually more cost effective to clean rather than replace. The dealer finishing up the head gasket replacement doesn't make access for EGR system and intake manifold cleaning more difficult, so either see if you are willing to pay the dealer to replace those items, check the price for replacement or cleaning at an independent shop, or do it yourself. There are threads here that show you how to do EGR and intake manifold cleaning, and it's doable yourself if you are mechanically able and willing to spend several hours over a couple days.

    Head gasket would be replaced by warranty, they are not responsible for cleaning anything until a cel shows. Head bolts were most likely changed as they usually fix the car per manual. If your head gasket fails, car stutters, runs like crap, call a lemon law lawyer in CA. Good mechanics keep the old parts/failed and give them to you as proof of work done.

    EGR system cleaning, throttle manifold,and other maintenance on Prius is a cakewalk. Add your OCC!
    Head gasket can be a challenge but doable if you really get comfortable with tools.
    No need to pay Toyota to do the easy stuff unless you just wanna . It's Just a few nuts and bolts and a few cans of cleaner. Search the forum lots of answers and guide here. Getting to know your vehicles needs and taking care of em keeps you both happy. Happy motoring!

    I just finished reading up on this thread and I recently bought a 2010 Prius V for 2,000 dollars with a blown head with 180,000 miles. I struck gold when I found a low millage engine and trany with 80,000 miles and the same shop willing to put it in for 1500. I know that early gen3's had a oil consumption issues. But, it seems head gaskets seems are a prominent issue among this generation. I think the issue is the electric water pump and maintenance. People dont seem to know when their car is overheating or if it is running hot for prolonged periods of time. All they have is a idiot light and many wont know that that light means to pull over. I imagine that the water pump dies sometime around 200,000 miles and the car ultimately overheats blowing the headgasket. What are your guys thoughts? Anything, else i should replace while I have the car in the shop. Im thinking the cat and egr. But, that comes with the new used engine.

    I don't know if 200K miles is right as an expected service life. The electric water pump will not provide advance warning of its failure. When it does fail, a DTC should be logged and an engine overheating light should eventually come on. I would be inclined to replace that pump after 100K miles of service.

    At least with a mechanical pump, the likely failure modes (worn pump bearing or worn serpentine belt) are well known and obvious to anyone who takes the time to look at the pump from time to time. Not to mention the cost of a new mechanical pump is around 25% of a new electric pump...
