Yup, the condition was the battery was not warm enough, because I usually drive down streets the have the speed limit of 25 MPH and I drive down these streets for about 1.5 - 2 miles before going on a faster road. This has worked for me every time. But today I decided to take a chance after only 1/2 mile, it was 46 F so what the heck, let's try it, wrong answer.

wow, that's really sad. sounds like they are protecting the battery more than the pip. maybe that's why i have so much degradation.

Actually it's the same situation for me, if the outside temperature is 50 f or below and I drive 25 MPH for the first 1.5-2 miles I'm ok .whether it's my old 2012 PIP or my old 2015 PIP or my new Prime.:coffee:

i thought there was a feature to preheat the battery while charging so it is more efficient, and less likely to call for the engine?

As I mentioned previously, I had the car plugged in before I made my trip, also I drove the car the day before so the three day rule doesn't apply

Toyota provides a battery heater while plugged in, the heater is deactivated after three days of being plugged in

No, it's not very clear what the purpose is.

This thread seems to be full of information about driving PRIME in colder weather. I am just posting my comment, so I can come back to it to read it through. Well, it's still August but the morning temp is starting to deep into 50s. Soon, I will be struggling to keep my PRIME keep in EV during morning commute. What has worked for folks who live in Northern climate?

Leaving front defroster off. And driving down side streets that have a speed limit of 25 MPH.:D

I drove it in 20 degree weather with snow and it stayed in Ev climbing 6% and 7% hills at 55mph.

Speed limit under 25mph is not a problem, but leaving defroster off can be challenging when temp gets really, really low. I guess from what I read, front defroster is instant EV killer. :(

You can still leave climate on, just not front defroster:D
