Woe, woe and thrice woe. (With apologies to 'Up Pompeii')
Good fortune has certainly not smiled on you with this car.

You should complain to the dealer while it's under warranty.

"Yeah it's normal, the mirrors on every Prius wobble, no we can't take a look at others on the lot, the sales manager has all the keys right now"

But anyway, windshields break, they just do. There is a thread here that has 3 pages of a few people mentioning cracks in their windshield. I never had one in my 2015 or 2017, including through 2 hail storms. However just a year ago my 1998 Ford Explorer windshield cracked instantly with no impact just from snow combined with defrost.

So I suppose what I am getting at is I see no evidence that says Prius suffer from cracked windshields more. You go to ANY vehicle forum, ANY at all and you will see people complaining about windshield cracks and rock chips and how that particular car is more susceptible than average. Obviously EVERY car can't be more susceptible than average. You get then 4-5 or so people who crack a windshield a month posting, not the 100,000+ that do not crack them every month.

Also, I would not be too sure that the 2 eco really has a different windshield. I know it is in some very early press releases, but I see no mention of it ever again. I do not think that feature made it from Japan, if it even made it in Japan at all. You can't find a part number for the special windshield, every site lists only 1 windshield between them all.

Yeah, it's true. They hate me. But wait until your windshield cracks. Look at the glass and we can continue the conversation.

You guys have the worst dealers ever! My closest dealer is horrible (and "family-owned" lol) so I go to the one that is 6 times farther away. Much better there. I went to the one near me to get the parking brake recall completed. They said it'd take 2 hours. I call in 2 hours and they say "We haven't even started yet."

Downtown Oakland Toyota kept my car for 8 days, neglected 5K maintenance and never completed a rear suspension repair. I fixed it myself.

So its for sure a problem, Our dealer said they are backordered nationwide for 3-4 months ( windows are still in manufacturing) and then will be giving priority to those that are not drivable, ( i.e.: accidents or hail damage.) Has already been 3 weeks today. Crack has now gone all the way across window. Really sucks! Also can only be replaced with a Toyota window, No aftermarket windows exist yet.

Hello. I have a 2017 prius as well. had small stone clip corner of window then a large crack occurred across it. Cost was $910 with a $500 deductible. This is the first crack I have ever had. This is my 7th prius with no problems on the others. Must be a glass problem.

I made a mistake. My windshield was $560, not $1000. Still sucks though that the car was only one year old. It's one of the simplest parts of the car and heat made the crack worse.

Yes, low-frequency, random events are very hard to assign a larger pattern unless you have access to lots of unbiased data. As humans we are usually over-eager to ascribe a reason to something, rather than random chance. Any forum like this is going to have a huge bias and a bunch of anecdotes.

    That said, here's my anecdote:

I have had rocks hit windshields of all the cars I own. All toyotas, but different models. Never had a windshield crack. Had a walnut-sized rock smack my Prius Eco's windshield a couple months ago, at 50 MPH. Cringed as I saw it coming, but it only left a very small chip in the glass

*KLINK* Had that happen to me the other day. Left a two small pits in my windshield. Only noticeable when you look for it, carefully.

This was by another car travelling in the opposite direction.

    *knock on wood*

I was driving home from work yesterday when a dump truck threw a giant rock and my windshield and it made a loud BANG noise! No crack or chip though.

I was driving a Jeep Renegade a few months ago and the exact same thing happened and the windshield cracked. I repaired it myself since it was a rental and they never noticed.

I am at local Toyota dealer right now to have my Prime's windshield replaced by subcontracted glass installer. The windshield had to be ordered through Toyota dealer for there is no aftermarket windshield available yet. Anyway, the glass installation took only 45 min, and the guy from the glass shop came to me and had me sign the insurance form. It's all done. According to him, now Toyota service is supposed to be working on re-calibration, however, when I first pulled in to their shop, the Toyota service manager had no clue. He said "never hard of re-calibration".

I have a bad feeling about this.:(

As it turned out, everything went well. 45 min for the glass installation, and 45 min more for the re-calibration. It's all done. Driving back from the dealer, I tested both LDA and DRCC, and both seems to be working, though I was not on highway, so I can't say if fine tuning was needed. There was no warning light or anything that may indicated something is not working. Though, I couldn't test pre-collision system and automatic high beams.

I asked the glass installer what the cost they are going to bill to the insurance, he told me the cost of windshield $600 plus installation cost, so I would think in neighborhood of $900? This part will be paid by insurance directly. As for the re-calibration cost to the dealer was only $147. This I had to pay for myself. I am going to ask for reimbursement from my insurance company for this.
