2012 prius rear brakes.

    So first a little info. I currently have a 2012 toyota prius five. About 140000 miles. Have replaced rear brakes once and working on second time. Fronts seem to be ok. I have probably screwed up from the get go by not buying OEM parts. I bought duralast golds last time and didn't replace all hardware like I should have. Recently drivers side rear was dragging bad only to realize slide pin had rusted, yes I had lubed them when changing previous time. Other three pins were fine just one rusted bad. When going to get all new hardware this time, nothing is the same. After double checking VIN it is a 2012 but trim level shows 2 instead of 5. Shouldn't be an issue at all, correct. But when buying hardware from AutoZone 2012 hardware looks nothing like it but 2011 hardware does. Has anyone else had this issue?
    I am a Toyota employee at a manufacturing plant so I know all about parts changes during a major model change but never minor model. Any insight would be helpful.

    What do you mean by "hardware"? Shims on back of pads?

    Also: did you pay attention to the piston orientation, the cross pattern on its face? Proper orientation is critical, or the brakes will drag badly, wear unevenly.

    i don't think there have been any brake assembly updates, and package shouldn't matter, unless the 17" wheels have different brakes?

    I think the US V, or Canadian Touring, (models with 17" rims) have some variations in steering feel, turning radius, but brakes are all the same.

    if it were me, i'd get the correct toyota parts and start over. but maybe it's simply installation error, and you can sort him out.

    Yeah, I'm waiting to hear, if he's aware of that piston face cross-pattern orientation thing.

    I'm not that familiar with rear disc brake cars, with integrated parking brake. Not sure how common it is, this (imperative) need to get that cross-pattern oriented just right. But Toyota's version seems to be catching a lot of DIY'rs and mechanics flat-footed.

    The hardware I'm referring to is the hardware that clips into caliper mounting brackets that the pads slide against. As far as the piston cross pattern I won't lie I don't know anything about that. First time I changed them I did one at a time. Honestly I think everything would have been fine if it weren't for slide pin rusting. Other side pads were in great shape.

    Yeah they should be fine, pretty much for the life the vehicle. I've never had to replace those, on any car. Just removing them without removal of the caliper mounting bracket is a royal pain.

    I'll attach a Repair Manual excerpt about brake maintenance. The rears rely on that cross pattern on the piston face, and a pin on the back of the pad, to prevent the piston from rotating when you apply the parking brake. The pin must stay in a hollow between the spokes of the cross pattern. If the pin rides up on the spoke, your brakes will not work right, will have uneven bearing, wear unevenly, and drag badly.

    What did you use to lube the pins? And the pin boots, if anything?

    I used the brake and caliper grease that I bought at auto zone. Other 3 pins look great. Apparently not enough lube on one pin. Now I need to get rust out of slide pin hole so I can put a new pin in. Any suggestions?

    That's another thing throwing me off. I ordered new pins for 2012 prius and new ones are shorter with a smaller cut for the rubber pin gasket. And old ones are 17mm while new is 14mm

    If I recall correctly, either the fronts or rears have pins of two different lengths. @Andy H. what's your approx location: that pin looks like it lived in the ocean. (n)

    Was your pin lube Sil-Glyde Brake Lubricant, or something similar, ie: a vaseline-looking lube meant for pins and their boots?

    Addendum: I think the different length pins are in the front. For rears I'm seeing it as part number 11 here:

    I got the lube from auto zone. It's not Vaseline looking. It's black as coal. "Synthetic" and no parts are not Toyota they are AutoZone duralast. Lesson learned. Next time buy OEM parts. Heck I even get a discount since I work at Toyota
