i find the oem quite vigorous. mine have lasted up to 8 years, so if i had to replace, i'd get another. mine is over 5 years old now and almost like new.

 

I too have a 2013 with 45,000 miles. When the 12v battery was going bad, the dash lights came on but not the Ready light indicator. I replaced the battery with a yellow top Optima, highly recommended.

 

12v longevity is usually time and climate related. but any accidental discharging will shorten life severely.
optima's were great, then went thru a bad phase, and seem to be better again.

 

But in my opinion are over-priced and their different design is mostly just a gimmick.

I would not replace the battery prematurely. Instead I would get a Batteryminder charger that also desulfinates:

I got mine on sale for $30. It will greatly extend the battery life. Install the ring connector under the hood for easy connect/disconnect. It completely rejuvenated a 6 year old battery in my MIL's Mazda 3 that was at 11.8 volts - back up to 12.3 volts steady and holding for as much as a week between driving it.

I bought a used 2011 Prius with 125,000 miles on it and the original OEM battery seemed weak by measuring the voltage, so I did replace it. I installed the Bosch battery made specifically for the Prius:

It has a 48 month warranty compared to the Optima Yellow Top 36 month warranty. Seriously, though, go for the BatteryMinder first. Keep in mind, the 12v battery does not need high cold cranking amps because it does not turn a starter for the engine, it only boots up computers.

 

can't beat a hundred and forty bucks for a prius battery.

 

I buy my battery from CostCo cheaper than auto stores.

What exactly does that mean ?
With the charger still connected ??
12.3 volts is somewhere around 70% charged.
If it drops to that within a few hours of disconnecting the charger, you haven't accomplished much and that battery is on it's last legs.
A healthy battery should hold somewhere around 12.8 for at least 24 hours when in the car......and MUCH longer if disconneced.

 

It means 12.3 volts after sitting for a week in a car that gets driven about once per week. It also means the difference between the engine cranking slowly and wondering if it is going to start and the engine cranking normally. It also means getting one or two more years of life out of the battery.

It sure sounds like he is NOT talking about a hybrid.......in which the 12 V battery does not "crank" the engine at all.

 

That particular battery is in a non - hybrid, however, the Prius 12v battery is still just a lead acid auto battery and the same BatteryMinder will rejuvenate it and keep it healthy longer.

I just can't see replacing a 2013 battery showing no signs of failure when with a little preventative maintenance it probably has at least a couple more years life in it.

 

agreed, i don't like replacing anything before it's time, just a waste of resources.
