I question the "turning off the fan at max A/C". How does the cabin cool then? (or are they thinking max heat and using radiant heating like the new S-Class and its heated door panels)

I find the vent mode button, and the fresh/recirc buttons, both require too much eyes off the road time, tantamount to distracted driving. That can bad for health very suddenly, lol.

The 100% recirc on the Gen 3 (the upload_2017-7-7_20-34-23.png button) has a 3 minute timer. Normal recirc is about 80% recirc, 20% fresh air.

alas - the only apparent solution is to ban carbon fuel. Sorry ... we'll all just have to go electric - powered by renewable energy sources. Someone wake me when my dream is over.

Source: Ford Explorer Exhaust Smells Investigated | CarComplaints.com

July 8, 2016 — Ford Explorer exhaust smells will be investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) after the agency received 154 complaints about exhaust fumes entering 2011-2015 Ford Explorer SUVs.

Ford owners complain about occupants smelling exhaust fumes and being sickened by carbon monoxide. The Ford Explorer exhaust smells can be so severe owners sell their SUVs to get away from nausea and headaches associated with the odors.
    . . .

I saw a TV report last night that some Fords in Texas are being taken out of service due to the problem.

and yet, they're probably still selling them by the boat load to innocent unsuspecting consumers.

I'm worried more about the possible poisons and carcinogens given off by that new car smell as all the man made materials outgas. My windows will be open as much as possible in the next several weeks as it calms down.

How are 4th gen in that regard? Our 3rd gen was the first new car that had little or no "new car" smell. Might helped that it had sat around for about 15 months. But I understand they made a point of using vegetable based plastics in the interior. Doesn't seem to be in the brochure, but I think I read that somewhere.

It is 100% new car smell. And with a black interior, the sun and 90 degree days, it is quite potent.

    There's the smell of SofTex.

It's probably the 15 months lol. Occasionally, I can still smell the "new leather smell", particularly if the car has been parked in the sun (and the SVPS wasn't running due to shade).

Yes, the driver's seat cushion, the front door sills and the rear hatch sill plastic pieces are made from plant-derived plastics.

sounds like a candidate for a car with 'bio-weapon defense mode' - .3 micron filtration

Tesla's Bioweapon Defense mode could add years to your life - in Beijing - ExtremeTech

I had no idea what was going on here, so I looked it up.
Ford Explorer Exhaust Lawsuit Settled by Parties | CarComplaints.com
Feds probe exhaust fumes filling Ford Explorer

450 complaints aren't very high, but ford definitely knows it has a defect, and it may not know how to fix it (2017 article states some that have had dealers fix it, don't believe it is fixed). Hydrogen Sulfide is likely what they are smelling from the rotten egg description. This is probably formed in the catalytic converter with exhaust leaking into the cabin afterwards. Not likely much carbon monoxide, but not good.
